MRI Report
Jul 22, 2003
Hi All

Maybe I can get this right this time. My neuro called today and said that he got the written report from my MRI and does not want me to wait for my August 5 appointment...he wants me to come in next Tuesday afternoon. That worries me.

I picked up my report today and part of it says, "there is moderate increased signal within the left paracentral location and in the left side of the spinal canal at the L5-S1 level. A majority of this does show contrast enhancement and will represent post-operative scarring. However, there is a large left paracentral disc herniation present at the L5-S1 level. The combination of these findings result in marked posterior displacement of the left S1 nerve root as well as the effacement of the ventral left side of the thecal sac at this level."

Can anyone translate any of this? What is "posterior displacement"? And "effacement of the bentral left side of the thecal sac at this level"? What is a "thecal sac"? I am sorry I am so uninformed (another word for stupid! :D)

Also...today my husband was given his 30 day notice. The plant where he works is closing. So, today has not been a good day. :( Just pray for us. Things just keep building up and it's all so overwhelming.

I am thinking of you all and I wish you pain free days and nights. And, thank you in advance, my friends
love to you

April 14, 2003 - L5S1 Partial laminectomy/discectomy. 5 hour surgery. One nerve almost severed by herniation, two nerves adhered together b/c of inflammation. Neurosurgeon had to reattach the almost severed nerve. He also coated the nerves that were stuck together with silicone.

May 27, 2003 - returned to work full time. The first week was agonizing.

July 1, 2003 - still having a lot of pain. The last two weeks the pain is different...it has moved to the right side, just above my hip. It is a stabbing, burning pain, very severe. I still have no feeling down the back of my left leg, the outside of my left foot and my two smallest toes. Appointment with the neurosurgeon July 8...my three month visit.

July 8, 2003 - Neuro vist. He ordered another MRI ASAP. He is sure the disc has re-herniated and will probably want to do surgery again. Either another partial laminectomy/discectomy or fusion.

July 16, 2003 - MRI With- and without-contrast - hopefully will tell us what is going on and why I am in so much pain.

July 21, 2003 - MRI results show that the disc has re-herniated on the other side _the right side) and that I have "prominent" scar tissue. Neuro appointment on August 5 to discuss the results.

Hi Friends

Thank you all so much for the info. In answer to your question...I probably do have pain down the back of my left leg and two smallest toes, but that's where I am numb from my last surgery so I can't feel it. The neuro asked me the same thing and I told him that I have no feeling there and he was very concerned. He has moved my appointment from August 5 to July 29 (next Tuesday).

So, if I understand it correctly, the nerniation is pressing into the sac of fluid that surrounds the spinal canal? Are any of my results anything to be worried about? I am trying to keep a positive attitude and be upbeat about it...but it sure is hard It will all be ok though. After all, I have God on my side

How are all of you doing? I am wishing you pain-free days and wonderful sleep at night

Love to you all

Hi HNP:wave
And....Everyone Else, too:wave

I don't have my first MRI films. The disc is ruptured in the same place it was last time. It says that I have a "large left paracentral disc hernation at the L5-S1 level resulting in severe left S1 nerve root compromise." It just seems to be affecting me differently this time and I don't understand that. Of course I have figured out that the reason my left leg doesn't hurt is because I don't have any feeling in the places that would be hurting.

Also, what does "prominent about of epidural scarring mean" ? Is there anything he can do about that?

Well, anyway, I go to see my neurosurgeon Tuesday afternoon. It concerns me that he wanted to see me right away instead of waiting until my August 5 appointment. :( That was only a week later. Any thoguhts on this? Also, his office called me 30 minutes after he got the report and they have called twice since then "just to see how I was doing". That bothers me, too. But, I guess I will have all my questions answered Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed and pray for me.

How is everyone doing?
I am headed off to bed.
Wishing everyone a pain-free night and wonderful day tomorrow.
Love to you all

Hi There

Well, I got the news...surgery on August 13. He is going to do an L5 S1 polar. I am not quite sure of what is all involved but he said that he would be putting a "cage" in and using bone marrow from my hip. If he needs to use bone, he will use the part of vertebrae that he took out. He said that I will have a rod and screws. I am trying to do some research on it so I will know exactly what he is going to do.
He did say the surgery would last from 4-6 hours.

Have you ever heard of this? Is it just a "normal" fusion? Right now, I am scared out of my mind, but I am trying really hard to get a grip and look at it rationally. The pain is horrible right now and he said it would better after surgery. Also, he said that I really don't have a choice because it is affecting my bladder. The disc is also pressing on the sciatic nerve aned also the thecal sac. He said it is very serious and needs immediate attention.

ok, guys....tell me what you wll think. Is this good or bad? Has anyone had this done before?

I am heading off to bed
Sleep well everyone and I wish you all a pain free day tomorrow.

HI Everyone
Hi HNP

I guess I have been in a fog the last few days. I don't know what my problem is, I just can't get it together. I haven't wanted to talk to anyone and there is so much I need to get done and I am getting nowhere fast...running in circles.

Last night I started a new thread. I had lots of questons and it was quite a long post with several questions and somehow it didn't post. It told me to hit the back button and when I did, I lost the whole thing. I will try to remember everything I said and begin it again.

And, HNP...thanks a lot. Your concern means more than you will ever know. Please read the new thread...I know you have some info for me. You always come to my aid here. Thanks

Love to you all
