Need advice
Sep 19, 2003
Hi all, I need advice on a few things. I'm having pain and a TON of spasms around the L1/T12 area, but the spasms are going through my entire back. I'm on Skelaxin 800mg 3 to 4 times a day and it's doing NOTHING for my back! It is helping my leg pain, but my back is still going nuts. My TENS helps a bit, but as soon as I turn it off things get bad again.

I've also noticed that I can't lay down at all anymore! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to lay comfortably to rest? I can't lay flat on my back or on my sides (even with pillows between my knees) because it produces horrible spasms in my lumbar area. Then laying on my stomach hurts my back and my legs. The only comfortable position for me is standing and I can't do that anymore because I now have tenditis in my feet from standing so many hours of the day.

My last question is, I go to my primary care dr on Thursday and last week he mentioned ordering a CT scan of my back. I'm a little concerned, because chiro told me MRIs are better and CT scans can miss disc problems. I should add my primary dr thinks I have a bone problem since I have "bone tenderness", but x-rays were normal of both Thoratic and Lumbar. Chiro thinks it's a disc since I have leg pain. I would hate to have a CT scan miss something that an MRI would have picked up and I'm in so much pain I can't stand it any longer. I'm also really afraid of losing my job since I can't stand or sit anymore for more than 15 mins at a time!

Thanks for listening ~ Katt

Thanks for replying. I did suffer for so long from lack of insurance, it's a terrible thing not to have it! Though, in the past month or so thing have gotten much worse. I use to be able to sleep ok and at least get some relief from laying on my side and watching tv or whatever. Not anymore!

This was only my 2nd visit to my primary care dr about my back, so that is why he hasn't refered me anywhere yet. I had to wait so my new insurance wouldn't consider it pre exsisting and then not cover anything related to it! Things have gotten worse this week alone, so I'm sure he will refer me out once he hears the meds aren't doing a thing.

I do have a recliner, but since sitting is the worst position for me as far as pain goes, it doesn't help much :( I use it with my laptop to go online and that's about it. My chiro suggested trying to sleep on the floor, since sometimes just laying on the floor helps.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply, take care.

sioux-z-q ~ Thanks for replying. I do have a pretty firm mattress and we recently put a board under our mattress as well, so I don't think that's the problem. I've also tried laying on the floor a lot and that helps a bit, but not much really. I actually don't think we have state disability out here in AZ, but I'm not 100% sure. I've been looking on state websites and haven't seen anything. I do know one of my co-workers had a fusion last month and all of his was unpaid just through FMLA. So, I don't think AZ has something like that. My job is pretty ok about me taking time off, but most of it is without pay. Also, my primary care dr and chiro have both offered to write me as many notes out of work as I need, but again most of that is without pay :( Thank you for your prayers, I do appreicate that. I have a wonderful fiance, so he's doing all the housework, etc so I can rest :)

Linda ~ Thanks for replying. I know it really is a touchy situation with the insurance company and I have to be very careful. My ins started on June 1st, so I waited 90 days to even see my primary care dr. My chiro knows the whole story and he's been telling me what to tell my primary dr so things get done. I can't get into the whole story, but my chiro is willing to help me if insurance starts to investigate. Since I've been self paying all these months, they have no idea I've been seeing a chiro. Sometimes records get lost...you get the idea :)

I know I'm pretty in for a long wait, because you're right, most back problems will heal on their own and dr's know that. I think the one "good" thing is I have Sciatica (not that it's a good thing!), but once my primary dr heard that he seemed to take things a little more seriously. He had me get x-rays taken the same day of my appt and mentioned that for most patients he would just have them wait a few weeks, rest and then do x-rays. I go back on Thursday and last appt he mentioned a CT Scan if things hadn't improved, so I think that is what will probably happen.

You mentioned you had problems like this with ins as well? Can I ask if things worked out or if they refused to pay?

Linda, Oh my gosh I can't believe all that you have been through! It must be so frustrating not to know exactly what is wrong and having to endure all those tortureograms, opps I mean discograms! Hopefully you can find a dr that can tell you exactly what is wrong and they can try something that will work. 4 years is a long time to suffer without an answer!

I am going to mention to my dr about an MRI vs CT scan, I think he's saying CT scan because he think I have some kind of a bone problem (even though x-rays were normal). I have pain at about my T12/L1 area and since it's uncommon to herniate a disc up that high, he's thinking bone problems, thus a CT scan. My chiro still is thinking disc because of the leg and foot pain I have, so who knows?! I guess if my CT scan came back normal, they could do an MRI, but then ins co would really love me :)

I know what you mean about co-pays and this has cost me so much money that I really don't have in co-pays and also visits to my chiro. My dr is suggesting PT now and that's $15 a visit. UGH! I'm sorry that you had to file for bankruptcy on top of all the pain and suffering. All this pain really robs you of your being. Good luck to you and I hope you can find an answer soon!

Well, I think I may be ok even if I have an EMG because I didn't start having leg pain until about one month before insurance kicked in. It was always in my back and then something happened and made the back pain get 100x worse and then the leg pain. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens. The worst they can do is make me wait until next June 1st and hopefully that won't happen.
