I am just a month past a year Post OP, Discectomy/Laminectomy L5-S1, I still have chronic pain in my right leg where the original pain was, and now in my left leg, as well, My pain is due to nerve damage, from scar tissue that had formed prior to surgery around the nerve to protect it where it had been compressed, they cut away as much scar tissue as possible during surgery but could not get it all for fear of damaging the nerve moreso, according to a MRI back in Oct. 2004, more scar tissue has formed around the nerve again, the doctors will not go in and remove the scar tissue because they say it just forms worse each time you remove it.....My recovery after surgery was not bad at all, I was totally pain free immediately after surgery, and it stayed that way for approx. 2 weeks, then the pain slowly started to return....my post surgery pain was not completely unbearable, just a bit sore...I was extremely careful after my surgery, until about 10 days in and my doc said I could pretty much do anything I want to within reason, and in moderation....I don't regret having the surgery, simply because my Neurologist told me that if I did not have the surgery, my pain would eventually go away, simply because the nerve would die, and I would loose all function and feeling in my leg permenantly... atleast now I still have some function, and feeling, but yes I do deal with chronic pain on a daily basis...constant trying of new meds, seeing what might work, then having them maybe make me sick or have other side effects, then they have to be changed again, try something new... so on and so forth... just trial and error.... it is quite stressful, and sometimes quite depressing... but you try to learn to deal.... Good Luck with your surgery hopefully you will be pain free soon...... Take Care

I had a diskectomy and spinal fusion in March (C5-C6). The recovery wasn't nearly as bad as I was afraid it might be. I've had good results in that I have no more neck pain. I also used to get severe migraines which are now gone. I no longer get muscle spasms in my neck either. However, I still have terrible upper back, left scapular, and left arm pain. I'm not even sure that these are related to my neck problems, though. I'm still seeing many doctors to try to figure out what is going on. I can honestly say that the upper back pain was worse for me than the postoperative pain if that helps any. Good luck!
I'd like to add my 2 cents.

I'm one of the ones who left the board, because I'm doing fine and I feel normal.

I just celebrated my 1 year post-op, on Nov. 13th. Yay me!!!

I was in pain for about 2 months, then excruiciating pain for several weeks, and my right calf started to atrophy.

Then I had my discectomy. The surgery was fine, my recovery was painful, but rapid. The first two weeks I was at home, moving from my bedroom to the sofa, but after a month I was out of the house.

I think the first 4 - 6 months after surgery I experienced stiffness, and a general sense of weakness in the area.

A year later, it's the same, only much less.

My calf is still a tiny bit weaker than the other one.
