MED Recovery Time
Aug 29, 2005
Hello all -

I am writing to compare some experiences and get a deeper understanding of what I should be expecting post an MED surgery. I had a MED for a herniated disc, left, for L4-L5. It has been 6 weeks. My lower back, where I had no pain previously, is in good shape. My leg, where the pain has been, is not in good shape. The pain has come down since surgery but it is just now at pre-surgery levels. Most of the pain is centered in my upper leg, in the butt (no pun intended) and is brought on through walking and stretching. Occasionaly, I get a painful throbbing not associated with movement. In addition, in the last three weeks I get the pins and needles in the foot and calf, generally after being seated or laying down. The doctor has me on neurontin, but its tought to tell if it is helping or not.

It would be great to be able to compare my experiences with others. In addition, if there are any people that know some good 'facts' (e.g., are the pins and needles a good sign or a bad sign?). As a matter of comparison, apparently the herniation was on the large side and they had to shave 4mm of the bone away (as opposed to a planned 1mm). Not sure if that has an impact or not.

Thanks in advance for your help.
