Hi,

I am concerned about a Lump that has developed on the left side of my lower back. I have no obvious injury etc, it is sore to touch at times and its very swollen and hard and is noticibly swollen on the back. Could a herniated disc cause this or is there any other explanation for this. I am seeing my pain specialist next week as i am in alot of pain from my neck and lower back problems and have had a progressive increase in pain and difficulty walking etc in last 3 weeks and now a swelling, should i contact my doctor sooner or would it be ok to leave a little longer as it has been there a week or so now and after sitting walking it gets larger.

I would be so grateful of some answers/suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mel
Hi,

Thank you so much for your replies.

Yes i had surgery nearly a year ago on L5 disc. I was improving pain and mobility etc and then i was hit from behind but never got scan or x-ray done to check if anything was damaged(i know i should have) But tired of Doc's now. There was alot of swelling and very bad bruising from the incident but that healed.
Now i have bad swelling again but no bruising and it has been 5 months since the incident and have terrible neck, headaches and lower back and hip/leg pain.... Its just very stressful at the moment and im not very good at explaining to my consultant the extent of my pain etc, i get very nervous and forget to mention most of it.

I just dont see any relent in the pain and really need a break!

Thanks( just need a little rant!)

I have a large lump on the back of my neck between my shoulder blades. I thought because I my weight gain it was just fatty tissue, but then I began to experience pain and spasms in my neck, shoulder, and back of my head. This would wake me up after a long sleep. I noticed that it occurred if I was holding my head back and reaching up for long periods (painting) or doing in heavy lifting. I went to my physiatric dr. and he gave me seven shots. I have felt a lot better, but the lump is still there. He said it could be arthritis from bony tissue pressing on my neck. However, sometimes, I feel that I have the weight of the world on my shoulders both figuratively and literally. Not to mention that I don't want to wear any low cut clothes. It is not a hunch back, but to me it is obvious.
Is this a lump that you can move around? Can you pinch it between two fingers? Can you have someone mark it for you with a permanent marker? Is it hard or soft? These are all questions that you will want to answer when you see a doc. Mine were first diagnosed as lipomas until I went into more detail with a spine doc and he felt them. Then it was determined that they were cysts formed from scar tissue and I had them removed. But, now I have more and a doc is calling them trigger points.

You could feel mine in the lymph node areas and could move them around. They multipled with time and became very painful. When they were removed, it was determined that they were part fat, part scar tissue and part nerves that had formed bundles. They were in my muscle tissue. So, I had the whole meal deal.

They are coming back, so surgery was not the answer. The docs are still scratching their heads to see what to do next.
