Hello Justoneofus:
Thank you for responding to my post. I really do appreciate it. The reason I am up so late, is due to the pain and anxiety I am experiencing these days. I injured my back at work, while helping a patient transfer from her wheelchair, to the dialysis chair. She lost her balance, and veered to the right. Afraid that she would fall and break her hip, I held her around the waist to support her during transfer, but she was a short, rather squat woman. I had to bend at the knee, and I am rather thin. While I was attempting to prevent her from falling with all of my strength, I felt a "pop" in my back, and immediately, experienced terrible spasms. By the fifth day, when I attempted to get out of bed, my legs would just not cooperate. I also had a tremendous "lump" on my mid back, which was all spasm. I finally wen to my PCP, and he ordered an MRI. The MRI of the Thoracic spine, showed two herniations, and I was then referred to a neurosurgeon. He checked out my MRI and decided I was to be treated with conservative measures, but told me that if I experienced any spinal cord symptoms, to call him. It was then, that I started to experience numbness in my legs. My feet felt as though, I was walking on marbles, but at the same time, were very painful and felt hot. I called the neuro back, he examined me, ordered a Lumbar MRI, which showed all of the disc problems that I included in my original post. Again, he told me to go home and rest. I called him numerous times, complaining of numbness, but my complaints were largely ignored, and then, he referred me to another neuro, as he did not want to deal with W/C. That is only after my leg went completely dead, and I fell and fractured my ankle. The rest is history. I was in terrible pain for the first six months, and it was only after being referred to a pain management specialist, that I felt relief. He put me on opiates, for the first time, and even though I balked at having to take them, they were quite effective. I was prescribed oxycotin 30 mg, twice a day. I was also prescribed hydromorphone, 8 mg. and I was told, I can take up to 6 pills a day. That is my story, but I am very worried now, about the numbness and swelling of the right leg and foot. It is very painful, but the biggest concern, is that this process is taking so long, that I am afraid of permanent damage to my spine from scar tissue. I have made so much noise already, I don't know what else to do. I do have an attorney, but about the only thing he is good for, is getting me the hearings that I need to ensure that my W/C checks keep coming, and the need for someone to represent me during the hearings.
Again, Thank You for your response, it was very nice of you to take the time to respond.
