I had fusion a little over 6 mos. ago for DDD. I have actually yet to see an improvement in the pain. Im not going to sugar coat it for you. It sucks, every second. They went through my stomach and now i have to live with a six-inch scar to the left of my bellybutton. To me it is huge and SO ugly. I was in surgery for 8 hours and in the hospital for 5 days. I am 20 years old and rely on pain medicine to perform daily activities such as showering, riding in a car, sleep, sit at the dinner table to eat and every other aspect of life. I have to depend on everyone around me to help me lift things, get dressed and so much more. If I could go back, I would not have had the fusion. They put a cage in my disc space and took a bone graft from my left hip (the worst part of everthing!) If i move just right i can feel the cage in my back and it makes me instantly nauseous. If you go through with the surgery just know in your heart that you will never be whole again and your back will continue to deteriorate. I have slowly come to terms with this but it still depresses me when i think that I will never be able to finish college and work the job that I am passionate about. But life goes on and you make the best you can with it. I also have SI joint dysfunction and are getting ready to have more steriod epidurals in my hips which I have heard NOT good things about.

Sorry this sounds so depressing, just want you do know what I go through everyday.
Good Luck.
Hansen
