Back Problems Board Index

Hello back friends,

As some of you may know, I had an EMG done on the 9th. I recieved the official report today and talked to the PA at the physiatrist office. The conclusions of the report are as follows:

1) Results are consisten with an acute right S1 radiculopathy.
2) There is evidence for denervation in a single LLE muscle (gastroc), which is of unclear clinical significane. It may represent partial left L5/S1 radiculopathy but is not diagnositic.

From what he told me is that it shows pinching of the nerve at S1 on the right. And the results from 2) are inconclusive and there seems to be pinching of the nerve there too.

So, I said that this doesn't seem to make any sense to me since my MRI from Sept. '06 said that I have disc material abutting the left L4/L5 nerve root. He said that either L4/L5 could be worse or the lower parts are irritating the nerves. He also said that it could be a central problem or an acute new problem that has appeared in the lower parts. So, he is going to schedule another MRI w/wo contrast and I should probably consult an neurosurgeon.
I am really scared now. I never had any problem with S1. I really didn't want to have to have surgery again. I had a microdisectomy on L4/L5 2 years ago. I am now off of the noritryptiline and he put my on Lyrica. I have taken it for a few days now and it is not doing anything for me. He told me to finish the 7 day trial and if it works to call for more, if not to stop it all together. I am just very frustrated and sad about this whole thing. I should be glad that I got some answers. But, I can't help to feel worry and sadness at the same time. I just started a new tutoring job and I don't want to have to back out. I dunno what to do. I am sorry for such a long post, but I know that you guys can give me some words of wisdom. I hope everyone is feeling good today. Thank you again.

Hey Angie... we could be bad back twins!

I too show denervation at S1 right leg muscle atrophy & some compression at L5 left (mri confirmed by emg). My neuro surgeon wants me to wait at this time & to see if I become more symptomatic & to get more active. Of course I'm fine with this as I am more sore, feeling pressure (which is uncomfortable but manageable) and numbness in my feet & butt.

My biggest concern is that each time I've had a herniation (3 over 20 yrs) I get more sensory nerve damage which does not return & I do not want to suffer motor function loss which is the next step.

Do you have alot of pain (mine is like a 2-3 out of 10)?

How old are you? Any other symptoms?

Take care & keep talkin... Dave!
Hi Dave,

Thanks for your response. I am 32 years old. Everyone says you are way to young for this. I am really sick of that line. Anyways, I have pain in both hips, pain down the back of both legs, pain down the front of my thighs. Sometimes the thigh pain is really bad. I usually have hip pain everyday. My PA for physiatry said that is due to arthritis in my facet joints. The leg pain usually creeps up as the day progressess and driving really sets me off too. I can't even drive a half hour without being in pain if I really didn't hurt that much to begin with. My pain level is usually anywhere from a 3-5 sometimes a 6 if the thigh pain really acts up. And of course the back hurts all the time at a level of about a 4 or so.

After my microdisectomy 2 years ago, I have times when my feet feel a little numb. I have had some areas of temporary numbness in my shins. Did your neuro suggest surgery down the road? And if so, what kind? Thanks again for your reply. I truly appreciate it.
Hey Ang... I'm 48 by the way & had my 1st herniation at 25. The neuro said he would have to do a fusion w/spacers, hardware & bmp at S1-L5 as I am almost bone on bone with arthritis at that level. He's hoping to just do a micro-d at L5-L4 but may end up a fusion as well. Unfortunately, L4-L3 is bulging now so I may be lookin at further work there in the future (can you say new lumbar spine?!!!).

He told me he would like me to get more active (easier said then done!) & then if I have another episode we would do the surgery or if I tell him he will do it now... I'm gonna wait & see how it goes & hopefully make the summer I'm just gettin so sick it like everyone else.

You're pain sounds worse then mine do have meds? I take about a 1/4 of a lortab 500 about 4-5 nights a week to take the edge off so I can sleep as the pressure/pain does disturb then.

Take care & stay in touch... Dave!
Hey Dave,

I am on pain meds. I am currently taking percocet..about 6 a day and I just recently started Lyrica. The lyrica helps me sleep which is good but hasn't done anything yet for the pain. I have been on it now for a few days and since I told him today that it makes me too tired in the morning that I should take both 75 mg doses at night. If it doesn't help by the end of this week, we will not continue with it. I really hope I don't have to have a fusion, it really scares me. I know that a lot of people on here have had it. I just hope that there is another way. I guess I will just have to wait and see. Thanks again for your help. Take it easy.
