In 2002 I was in a bad car accident. Luckily, I escaped with some scratched, nasty bruises, and a pretty bad case of whiplash. I never sought medical attention. I noticed some "issues" with my hip, but didn't put two and two together. I thought it was just a joint thing since I'd never experienced it before. A few months later, I was pregnant with my first child, and had a terrible time with my hip/lower back pain, which I eventually learned was sciatica. 3 days after the birth of my son, I tried to get out of bed one morning and couldn't bear any weight on my left leg. I was diagnosed with a bulging L5-4. Over the last four years, I have been plagued with sciatica and back pain that has been treated with narcotics, NSaids, and physical therapy. Each time it would get better for a while, only to flare up if I was doing alot of bending, squatting, or lifting, with severe recurrences every few months. I refused surgery based on my age (early 20's) and the opinion of several doctors. I've developed mild neuropathy in my foot, but nothing that would be considered a neurological emergency.

We just moved to a new town and I went to an urgent care clinic with my latest flare up. I was given a steroid injection. Noone has attempted this before, but it has been a week and I feel great. I don't even have the pulling or soreness that I had become accustomed to in every day life.

I have some questions: first, why has noone attempted to treat me with steroids before? Second, how long can I expect the relief to last? Third, how often will docs administer this treatment, and what kind of side effects can be expected from sporadic use? I know all about weight gain and the other steroid side effects, but if it is a once in a blue moon treatment, do I have anything to worry about?

Thanks for any experiences!
