? about Ultram ER
Oct 15, 2007
Hi everybody. My Dr. just started me on Ultram ER last Fri. It is really helping my pain. I take 200mg in the morning and another 200mg at bedtime...I had taken the regular Ultram many years ago and it didn't help at all. I am having the least pain now than I have had in yearsssssssssssssssss.

Last week I went to wally world and bought a new area rug for in front of my couch. Well, I have been itching like crazy ever since. Now, the question is...Which is causing me to itch...the new rug, or the Ultram ER? Unfortunately, the new rug and the beginning of me starting the new med were on the same day~~~. I was waking up last night clawing myself silly.

I am so hoping it is the rug, and not the Ultram ER. I am already stressing about if it is the new med, which is working, I might have to go off of it....

Has any one ever had an itching reaction to Ultram ER?

Have a good day.
Mammy
Hey there Mammy,

Thats a tough call there to figure out but could prob easily be done imo. I would take the rug out of the house, clean the area very well and leave that way for a week or so to see if your itching stops. Prob alot easier than going off of a drug first lol :). I used to take the exact same dose of Ultram for a very long time before I increased to other meds and never personally found a problem with ultam and itching. However, we all act differently to diff meds, I was currently placed on Dilaudid and find that with this I can not stop itching but the pain relief is great. god bless and I hope things work out for the better. Cyah later and pls post some more questions if i can be of help to you .
Thanks for the reply....My hubby eats in the living room, and is a smoker and in the last 3 months he has burned 3 holes in the carpet. That was the reason of putting a new rug down. The U ER is helping me so I sure am hoping it is the rug...My itching is sporadic...is yours????

Later, Brenda
had you used the regular fast release Ultram for a period of time before trying the ER?? I think the drugs are pretty much the same, and it would make sense to me that if the regular ultram didn't cause problems for you that the ER wouldn't either. When you look up the two, they will be in the same drug category-the main difference is how the drug is absorbed. I have just started the ER TODAY-I love my Ultram, but I was taking up to 300mg a day-sometimes 400mg-the max. I just needed to try something different. My MIL loves the ER so we'll see. I can't do the narcotic thing-just can't. Narcs will make me itch sometimes-but anyway-hope it is the rug!
let us know

Yes my itching is sporadic and only seems to bother me the most at night time when i lay down, not sure if it is really increased then or I just notice it more because I am trying to relax. Mel1977 asked if you had tried Ultram in anyother forms before this and if you had any issues then. IMO a very good question, as she says , "I dont beleive you will have probs with U ER, if the SA form did not bother you".

Well god bless and good day!
I took the regular Ultram many, many years ago. It did not help my pain at all. Before the U ER, I was on Tramadol 50mg. 4X a day. The pain was still really bad even taking that. I had no problems at all with the Tramadol, it just wasn't working any more. I had been on it for years.

My itching is still there but is not as bad as it was...and I haven't removed the rug yet. I am pretty confident it is the med....but I am going to keep taking it and pray the reaction disappears....I have until the 25th before I have to go back to the Dr. so I should know by then whats what.....

Added to the itching, now I am constipated....OMG!!!! It was a little better today, but I am soooooo sore.....Some people are telling me to buy Magnesium tablets and take them. Is that what some of you use? I know the Opiates cause constipation for me, but didn't expect it with this med...Maybe tomorrow will be easier.

I will take the itching, and the constipation, if I can get some relief from my pain. I have been this way for over 20 years, and this is the most relief I have EVER had......

Thanks for all the replies you guys. I appreciate your time so much. Hopefully, I'll see ya back on here soon. I don't come every day.....

Hi Mammy

I take Ultam ER. I did not have the itching that you are having, but I do have the consitpation ( spelling ) that you are talking about. Try a stool softner or more fiber in your diet, that works great for me. I am glad that you are getting some pain relief from this med! Works for me some days others it doesn't. I have been taking this for almost a year now, I did take Tramadol for over 6 years also ( among other things ). Hope things continue to get better. Take care.
Buy FiberOne Bars in the granola bar section of your grocery store. I eat one a day and take my Fiberone pill and I am set to go. (No pun intended. :D )

Hello neighbor....My hubby's folks live in C. Ohio. My constipation is better this morning. Maybe it will resolve itself without me having to take anything for it. That's what I am praying for anyway:D

What mg. of the U ER are you on? and how many times a day are you taking it?

I hope you have a great day and thank you very much for your reply....Mammy

I love the Granola bars, but I have never tried the Fiberone Bars. Everyone is so full of info...hahaha...I bet you thought I was going to say full of something else, didn't you...hahaha...nope, I wouldn't do that...or would I??

All jokes aside, thanks for your input....Hope today is a good one for you....Mammy
Hi Mammy,

Or I should say neighbor! I hope it does resolve its self ;) . I have been taking 200mg 1 to 2 times a day. Before I was taking tramadol 75mg 2 x 4 day, vicioden ect..... I am glad that your day is going well!! I am enjoying finally having some rain up here!!! Let me know if your itching is better.

Yes, the itching is better today. Seems like a lot of it is in the legs and ankles.. You were taking 600mg of Tramadol and I was only taking 200mg a day. I kept wondering why the Dr. didn't just up the tramadol instead of going to a new med completely...but I'll take it any way I can get it...pain-relief is pain-relief and I am thankful for every minute of it....I am sure you know exactly what I mean...

I did a little work around the house today and did have to take a Tramadol 50mg about 5:30...Guess I will need to slowly work my self up to being able to do much housework...Have a good evening..

Hi Mammy,

I have talked to you before on the chronic pain board, its nice to see you again, but I am sorry you are having trouble.

I have been on ultram for over a decade. First of all, it IS an opiate, a synthetic opiate, but still in that family. Because of that, it can cause all the side effects that other opiates cause, including constipation and itching.

I have expierienced both while taking this med, lowering your dose a bit might help, but really if you just hang in there, the side effects will lessen as your body gets used to the dosage.

I am surprised at how many people are still under the impression that Ultram (Tramadol) is not a narcotic, It was hyped that way when it first came out about 15 years ago, but now is classified the same as vicodin or oxycodone. Not the same med, but the same family of meds.

HTH, and you are feeling better soon!

I sure did not know that Fabby. BTW, I do remember talking to you. I am going to try and hang in there with the itching and const. I want to continue to take this med if it will continue to give me pain relief...I wonder why the Dr.'s here are ok with writing scripts for Ultram/Tramadol, and they won't write them for the vico. or oxy....I have never quit hurting for the last 20 years. I just accepted that was the way it was going to be...but now that I have taken this med., I know I do not have to be in pain all the time. My biggest problem outside of the pain was that I felt sore ALL THE TIME, and could hardly move because of the soreness. Hubby is calling me so I will talk to ya later. thanks for the reply...Mammy
