: I was told I had Spondylolithesis L5-S1 in 1985. I have always had some back pain but reciently I have hip pain mainly my left. The pain is a burning pain I don't really know much about this and would like more information. I haven't been able to find alot of information on this. I don't know what they can do to help me and what kind of tests should be ran to see if the Spondylolithesis L5-S1 has gotten worse if it can or if that is even the cause of the pain/burning. I seem to have burning pain in my hip and arm joints but the left hip is the worse. What do I need to do to find out if this is the cause of my pain? If anyone has any views or experiences with this please let me know. I would really like to hear your story.

Wow, it is great to see that so many of you have been able to manage your pain with PT or other forms of therapy. However, one thing that I think is important to not underestimate is the potential of permanent nerve damage. I have also been diagnosed with a grade 2 Spondylolisthesis and a break in the L5 spinal process. I have lived with the lower back pain, a numbness in both legs and a burning that is from left hip to left foot, for about 2 years. What made me want to take the condition seriously was the constant burning in my left leg. After talking to my surgeon, it became quite clear that the burning was being caused by the compression of the nerve between L5 and S1. Left untreated the nerve can become damaged to a point that even with surgery it still, will not improve. Complications of the damage can be; muscle atrophy, loss of bladder control and a drop foot. I am currently experiencing the start of all of these symptoms. Because of my current situation, I am scheduled to have surgery next Friday.

I do understand that each persons situation is different, but I would hate for anyone to experience what I am going through. At the very least I would recommend an MRI and find a highly qualified Orthopedic surgeon in your area. If you are in New England, I would suggest Dr. Lee Thibideau. He is located in Portland, Maine.
