Hey Bigphil,

I had a multi-level PLIF L4-S1 with plating, hardware, screws and whatever else they decided to put in there, on 2/22/11. Ive been doing PT 2-3 days/week for about 6 months and still feel absolutely horrible. The pain in my lower back , butt and left leg is unbearable sometimes, especially when walking, sitting, or standing. The newest symptom is now when I sit in a chair for too long, my back literally freezes in place and when i get up, I physically can not stand straight up for at least 5-10 min. I was also a automotive technician with hopes of continuing to do so. Been out of work for almost 2 years and counting.

Anyway, my surgeon is a cocky, arrogant, "neuro", and refuses to even acknowledge these symptoms. He blows my concerns off by simply saying things like, " It's just the healing process, "everything went 100%', 'you'll be fine and back to your automotive technician job in no time!', 'Give it 6 more months" blah, blah, blah!

Well recently, after my 6 month post-op visit with him, i took it upon my self to have my PT doctor get me a lower lumbar MRI ( this is all through NYS Workers Comp which is no easy task BTW). The report from the MRI came back today saying that I now have Facet Joint Hypertrophy @ the L3-4 level. Huh?
After doing a little research, this corresponds with the pain I'm having and now my hopes of going back to work are looking slim and I might need another surgery to correct this.

I've been on Roxicodone 15mg 3x's/day, flexeril and Valium 10mg for sleep. These things don't even work anymore that's how long I've been on them. I've found that for me, vaporizing/eating marijuana relieves alot of the joint and muscle pain at night time and allows for a decent night sleep, without the use of these " people killers " as I like to call them. I can't tell you how many times I turned down a script for Oxycontin. Sometimes I think these docs would rather have you be a junkie, and pump you up with pills of this stuff, then address the problem at hand.

Anyway man, enough of my ranting....just wanted to let you know that there are people like me in the same boat as you. Reading your post actually inspired me to register here ; and also made me feel that i wasn't alone in my pain after my back fusion.

Best of luck to you and yours

Mike
