I am scheduled in October to have a bilateral laminectomy. I have gotten three opinions, and decided to go with a neuro who specializes in spine surgery, and who I have good things about from other friends in the medical community. I have had pain for close to a year when standing running down left leg. Herniated disc at the L4-5 level, and S1 nerve(s) compressed. Herniation worse on right than left, but no pain on right. Did all conservative treatments: PT with traction, exercises, epidurals, medications, and now it is has gotten to a point I can't sleep.

SO...

Who has had this done or something similar, and can you share your experience?

Specifically:

Pain from surgery? Really bad?

Recovery time?

When you could return to work, and what kind of work you do?

Anything else you care to share?

Please be honest. You won't deter me. Thanks.

I had a laminectomy and spine fusion in 1978. The surgeon grafted from my thigh on to a lower spinal disc. I was in plaster from my chest down to my thighs for 6 months. Since then I have had no significant pain in my back but where the thigh graft was it has been tender as if the nerve is affected.
