What I always suggest to someone that is recommended for surgery is to get a 2nd or 3rd opinion.
And make sure that if you are treating with an orthopedist or a neurosurgeon is that they are specifically trained in spine issues.
I also check out where the doctor went to school, how many years in practice, where they did their internship etc.

I have had stenosis in the cervical area and after the surgery I was fine.
BUT I have had ongoing spine problems for 24 years. I have been thru 7 spine surgeries. In my case after each surgery a NEW problem arose. I found the surgeries were successful but for whatever reason a new issue popped up.

Again I suggest getting other opinions just to be on the safe side and to get another point of view. If you do get another point of view they may way say they agree on surgery.

Good luck
