What is going on in the lumbar spine is also an indication of the beginnings of what many doctors refer to as spinal arthritis. The there is marked sclerosis at the L5 vertebral body and at the endplate at S1. There is marked narrowing at the L5-S1 disk space.

Sclerosis is a build-up of calcium that builds up in areas of stress...this is an early stage of osteoarthritis....just as with osteophytes, the bone lays down more calcium in an attempt to try to stabilize a particular joint of the spine. This shows up as a white area or increased density on X-ray or MRI...and in your case there is sclerosis on the L5 vertebra and on the area of bone that touches the disc between L5 and S1.

Again, the result of this additional bone is that the disc space is narrowing.

The remainder of the lumbar vertebral bodies demonstrates minimal scoliosis,

Did you mean scoliosis or sclerosis? If scoliosis, it just means that there is a very slight curve to the vertebrae from Lumbar 1 to Lumbar 5. This is not an unusual finding. When there are some initial signs of degeneration, sometimes the muscles guard the area perceived to be injured. This can pull the bones out of alignment to a very small degree.

Again, hope this helps you to understand the language in your report, so you will be able to understand what the doctor is telling you, and you will be able to better discuss treatment options!
