... davidc- I'm so sorry to hear about your mom's health problems. It really does semm that when it rains, it pours around here. I'm like you - I fell out of a tree 36 years ago - broke my leg, but think this back problem can be attributed to that. I read somewhere that accidents in adolesence can cause back pain in adults. I thought your surgery was the 11th! I told... (6 replies)
... kenneth- Just wondering how you're doing today? Any improvement? You can't get any better info than what successtory gave! She is an inspiration! O'Girl ------------------ 20 years intermittent back pain - no treatment sought Nov 2001 - herniated disk - Right leg radiculopathy Jan 2002 - Chiropractic care Mar 2002 - MRI, X-Rays, Oral steroids (32 replies)
... krsyv- What kind of pain are you having? Back pain or leg pain? If nerve pain, ask for either Neurontin or Topomax. If anti-inflammatories make you sick, I'm afraid you may have some trouble with other pain medicines for back pain. Does tylenol affect you? If not, you could ask for Darvocet or Ultracet. Seattle- My pain mgmt dr believes in no narcotic pain medicine. ... (3 replies)

... cardinal- I'm sorry I don't have any answers to your questions. Just wanted you to know how sorry I am that you've been dealing with the nerve problem for so long. Do you have pain associated with it, or just numbness? O'Girl ------------------ 20 years intermittent back pain - no treatment sought Nov 2001 - herniated disk - Right leg radiculopathy Jan 2002 -... (3 replies)
... randee- Did you see the thread about post-surgery tips? Maybe there's something there that will help you prepare. I know I'm finding it interesting. O'Girl ------------------ 20 years intermittent back pain - no treatment sought Nov 2001 - herniated disk - Right leg radiculopathy Jan 2002 - Chiropractic care Mar 2002 - MRI, X-Rays, Oral steroids (19 replies)
... jchernyb- You're very welcome. I'm not sure exactly where I found that, but thought of you when I saw it. It's a good thing to have this information and written down when you visit your dr. next week. I have made it a habit of writing things down, otherwise, I forget. Hmmm, must be the pain meds, not the fact that I'm getting older or anything.... I'll be thinking of... (5 replies)
... shaukc- I am also a failed discectomy patient. I think there are lots of us on these boards. You and davidc are scheduled the same day for fusion. I will be praying for you both. Isillyme- My surgery is scheduled Nov. 18th. The bad news is my daughter will turn 21 on Nov. 21, and I so wanted to take her out and buy her her first legal drink! I am honestly hoping now... ... river rat- Your butt pain could be piriformis muscle, but it could also be residual nerve pain. There were times when my leg pain would radiate all the way down my leg, but most of the time it just ran to mid-butt. This was prior to my discectomy. There are exercises to do for the piriformis muscle (the chiro gave them to me prior to a diagnosis of herniated disk), but I... (6 replies)
... I had a herniated disk (slipped disk) but didn't know what was causing the intense pain. Started with a chiropractor 8 weeks after the onset of pain, spent 6-7 weeks going back 3 times a week, and never got anywhere. I don't think he made it any worse, though. But, now that I know everything wrong with my back, I wouldn't go to a chiro for anything. I think they probably... (7 replies)

... johnny- I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. But, I have to ask - if you're not having a lot of pain, why does your dr. want to do surgery? Your herniation is pretty large, I think. A discectomy is usually done for leg pain only and will not help with back pain. It should also be a last-ditch procedure. Herniations can heal themselves with time. How long have you... (2 replies)
... Tomorrow- I'm sure all that blood loss did cause anemia. I always make up an excuse (like an important meeting at work) and cancel my yearly if I'm on my period! (I'm chicken, I know). But, don't think I can do this with this surgery. What kind of excuse would I use?!? And, I surely don;t want to wait another 8 weeks to get it rescheduled! Isillyme- That really does... (27 replies)

... grams- I'm not familiar with the Bayer product. Does it contain a muscle relaxant with the anti-inflammatory? I always think ibuprofen is the best choice for pain, but that's just my opinion. O'Girl ------------------ 20 years intermittent back pain - no treatment sought Nov 2001 - herniated disk - Right leg radiculopathy (2 replies)
... Trisa- I take it they are doing that under local anesthesia? For my discogram, I had a shot of lidocaine prior to the insertion of the needles into the disks. This was the lumbar area, not the neck, but I don't think it's anymore painful than a shot of novacaine at the dentist. I think it's the thought of the needle in your back that is probably causing you the most... (2 replies)
... randee- I am about 4 weeks from surgery (Nov 18) and really scared, too. But, I know in my heart I'm doing the right thing. It took a long time to make that decision, and I now truly believe it will help me get my life back! If you trust your doctor, have gotten second opinions, and positively believe you're doing the right thing, go for it! We can compare success... (19 replies)

... Krysv- IDET was never suggested to me, but I'm like you - not sure that its success is well-documented. $20/visit for PT is expensive, but just think about all those millions of people who have no insurance. Exactly what tests, procedures and diagnosis have you had? Wishing you luck O'Girl (2 replies)

... PC509- Congratulations on being a success story! We truly do not see too many of them around here. How bad was your back pain prior to your surgery? I think my back pain was awful all along, but the 'butt' pain was overshadowing just how bad the back hurt prior to my discectomy. Please take it easy. You can reherniate that disk! O'Girl ------------------ 20... (2 replies)
... Sabrina- I, too, have foraminal narrowing. I believe the foramin is where the nerves exit the spinal cord. Both my X-Rays and MRI confirm my retrolisthesis - (the slippage is backwards). Let us know what your Ortho says.. O'Girl ------------------ 20 years intermittent back pain - no treatment sought Nov 2001 - herniated disk - Right leg radiculopathy (3 replies)

... Sorry to hear of your pain. I agree with the ice and advil. Maybe even a little time on the heating pad. It sounds like a muscle pull or muscle spasm. Does it hurt when you touch it? Good Luck O'Girl ------------------ 20 years intermittent back pain - no treatment sought (4 replies)
... Isillyme and Tomorrow- I will ask ahead about stitches/staples, etc. I had that glue stuff after my micro-d and it just healed itself. That is some cool stuff! I'm kinda worried about the 'time of the month' and surgery. I may be in trouble time-wise on this. However, I also think I'm beginning menopause. (Bring it on!) Isillyme, did you notice pain from having all... (27 replies)
... samilan- you described the same pain I've had several times. My pain dr. said it was probably muscle spasms. Does it hurt to touch it? Maybe you can try some muscle relaxants - I take Zanaflex(prescription). I've been having increased problems in the cervical area, too, but I have never said a word about it to any doctor. I want to get the lumbar fixed, and then deal... (3 replies)
