... Well....I am a wet blanket! Having gone through four lumbar surgeries over the space of about ten years, after having visited probably about 15 spine surgeons (lost count) , etc..., and being fused from L3-S1, I can only offer you some practical advice! First, you donít say how old you are...but I am guessing fairly young (at least from my perspective!). I can only suggest... (4 replies)
... Welcome to the Healthboards for Back Problems. It sounds as if your recovery is coming along successfully. You must have been thrilled to know longer suffer with that leg pain, sciatica.... I haven't heard of a brace such as yours. ... (7 replies)
... Hello Monas  , :bouncing: Welcome Home :bouncing: I am very happy to hear that you are doing so very well. It sounds as if your surgery was a success and I am very happy for you. I must say that I am very impressed that your surgeon had you transported into a rehabilitation center directly from the hospital. This was an option for me as well and I had regretted... ... I've never had a discectomy but I was fused at L5-S1. I walked 180 ft after surgery, I hear that's good as some can hardly get outta bed. Like yourself, my relief was immediately apparent. I ended up with some nerve pain (whewww!!) but it went away within 3 wks and had nothing to do with my activity (it was from surgery where they moved the nerves to operate). Don't tell... ... am and was in recovery by noon. Don't remember even going into the e.r. Had some tightness and pain in recovery which was quickly remedied by the nurse. Stayed the night in the hospital, was able to get up and walk to the bathroom by the next morning. ... (10 replies)
... hile....and the sad thing is, we never know what is "too much" until after we've done it and are laid low by recurring nerve pain. Most of the time it just sets recovery back a bit...but when done repeatedly, it can set up a sort of chronic nerve irritation... ... (3 replies)
... My doctor after my L5-S1 discetomy did not let me return to work till 5 weeks after my surgery; his reasoning was that I sit all day at my job and it is very bad for the back and increases your chances of re-herniation. Did not have a back brace. I would suggest making sure you take a break every 20-30 min and walk around your office space just to stretch and help take... (4 replies)
... Hi: Speaking of inflammatory.......I would like to mention: One week after my micro-d L5-S1 my right leg felt like it was ON FIRE. It burned, it hurt, it felt swollen (it wasn't). Horrible! On fire right from the very top to the very bottom of toes. Called the neurosurgeon. He prescribed the 6-day steriod pack (Methylprednisone 4mgs.). Well, it was a miracle. On... (11 replies)
... Hi: Yes, this sounds perfectly normal. I had a micro-d L5-S1 7 years ago. During my recovery, I had all kinds of different feelings/pains/pings/sensations that I didn't have before surgery. The back takes about 6 weeks to stabilize and form scar tissue (normal). So during this time you MUST be careful at everything you do. Watch your posture. No twisting, bending.... (11 replies)
... I am happy to hear that your recovery is coming along well. I was wondering how you were. I am so sorry to hear about your break up with your wife and what a rotten time to get the boot. ... (3 replies)
... taking it an hour at a time. To promote fusion and successful 'anchoring', your movements will be restricted. However, they encourage walking as it facilitates recovery and healing. My guess is that you won't even want to THINK of bike riding. Someone else posted a very good analogy. ... (3 replies)
... as well as a minor herniation at L4 impinging on both nerve roots, and a moderate herniation of L5 also impinging on both nerve roots. My most recent MRI has shown things are deteriorating and I am unable to work at this point. The pain is quite debilitating. ... (3 replies)
... Well...My neuro sent me to surgeon on Feb 2. Surgeon said I had to have l5-s1 removed as it is reducing my thecal sac by 50%! He did say he would have to cut some bone but would remove the whole disk. Same thing he said the scar tissue would form and that was all that would be done. I have asked in several posts here and on another med site about laminectomy/discectomy and... (14 replies)

... Dear Backto Basics I have a Inversion table and it does wonders for my pain. I have found that if I only use it two times a day for about 5 minutes at a time it does help with the pain. I can tell you that your Doctor will not let you use is after surgery until you are in full recovery. Discetomy L5/S1 02/17/2004 New MRI 05/2004 L5/S1 reherniated DDD L4/L5 also... (3 replies)
... I'm now 16 days post op. Sciatica is still gone completely, but sleeping and getting up and going in the am is absolutely horrific. No change in the low back pain I have when I wake up. Back feels like it is out as soon as I get up. All it takes is reaching to the sink and I will get the severe sharp pain in my left lower back. It almost brings me to my knees. I struggle... ... :( YOUR DOC DOESN'T BELIEVE IN PAIN MEDS. You are the patient and if painkillers will give you relief, find a Doc that will give you a script. There is no reason for you to be in pain and uncomfortable. Have this doctor validate why he/she doesn't believe in painkillers and why you should have to deal with pain. (14 replies)
