... I do believe that the recovery period is different for everyone and that many things contribute to it, like how severely the nerve was compressed prior to surgery, etc... ... (13 replies)
... I will be having a posterior cervical discectomy in a couple weeks. I've been dealing with this herniated disc for a year and half. ... (0 replies)
... Hello! I had a discectomy at L4-L5 on 2-25-14 so I am just shy of 6 weeks in my recovery. Today was my first day back at work. I have a desk job and work 10 hour days. My surgeon suggested I work only 5 hours a day for my first week back. I made it through my 5 hours but am a little concerned. Halfway through, my back started to ache - nothing horrible though. By the... (4 replies)

... I am 3 months post Discectomy. After 3 weeks my massage therapist said she was going to "pop" the scar tissue. It hurt sort of like what you mentioned. She explained to me that scar tissue around your spine is not a good thing. She worked on it a few more times over the first 6 weeks. My incision is flat and smooth. But when you mentioned popping that is somewhat how... (3 replies)

... Hi I'm new here so please beir with me. I had L5 laminectomy discectomy on Jan. 4,2013. I realize it's only been a month but seriously going crazy! What is the recovery period? ... (4 replies)
... I'd like to know people's experiences regarding the level of activity they were able to return to following this type of surgery. I know the recovery would take a while, but will I ever be able to do intense exercise again? ... (6 replies)
... I had an open (5" incision) bilateral discectomy with foraminotomy on L5-S1 two weeks ago. I don't see my surgeon for another four weeks but I am interested in a general guideline of when it is safe to start resuming activities. I was told no extreme bending, twisting, lifting or prolonged sitting until I see him at six weeks. I am already feeling the effects of... (5 replies)
... It may be that, since you are still quite early in recovery, that the nerve pain will lesson as your healing progresses. Some people get lucky and a discectomy relieves their pain almost immediately...but many do not get these immediate results. This is not to say that it will not work. ... (6 replies)
... Welcome to the board. First of all, I'm not sure what your surgeon meant when he told you the disc was "healed " and that the only thing left to do was to remove the disc fragments. Could you explain what you meant? Where was your discectomy -- like L4-L5, perhaps? It is a bit late to be told that many doctors restrict sitting time to 15-20 minutes at a time after any... ... ulge pressing on the nerve. He scheduled surgery for this Thursday. I am scared but also relieved that the pain could possibly be reduced. Any suggestions for recovery and how long it will be. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you. ... (1 replies)
... any more. I have been on dilaudid as needed since the pain started and nueroton 900 mg a day. The ER doc was the same doc that had refereed me to the emergency discectomy last year and he himself had had 3 back surgeries so he understood my pain. He added 5mg valume to my med list and the combo of the meds takes the edge off. ... (4 replies)
... I've never had a discectomy but I was fused at L5-S1. I walked 180 ft after surgery, I hear that's good as some can hardly get outta bed. Like yourself, my relief was immediately apparent. I ended up with some nerve pain (whewww!!) but it went away within 3 wks and had nothing to do with my activity (it was from surgery where they moved the nerves to operate). Don't tell... ... Mike, I know it has been several years since you posted about your back pain. I'm a 24 year old male that had been having similar problems and recently had a discectomy and am still experiencing sciatic pain. I'm curios how your recovery went? ... (7 replies)
... Sorry you are in so much pain. Have you done an oral steroid pack? That might shrink it enough to make it more bearable. I had two discectomies. It's going to take your nerve some time to recover, and you will probably have some lingering pain and numbness for a bit afterward. For my last surgery I had a 24 mm free fragment of herniated disc material removed during my... (4 replies)
... thanks az, I actually think about your prior post quite a bit. You know, when i wentr in to surgery last month, I held out for as long as bloddy possible. But, when I finally bellied-up and limped into the OR under the neurosurgeons knife, I was done. Beat. My days of fighting the notion through excersize, stretching, rolfing, chiro, accupuncture were done. It was time to... (7 replies)

... I'm now 16 days post op. Sciatica is still gone completely, but sleeping and getting up and going in the am is absolutely horrific. No change in the low back pain I have when I wake up. Back feels like it is out as soon as I get up. All it takes is reaching to the sink and I will get the severe sharp pain in my left lower back. It almost brings me to my knees. I struggle... ... :( YOUR DOC DOESN'T BELIEVE IN PAIN MEDS. You are the patient and if painkillers will give you relief, find a Doc that will give you a script. There is no reason for you to be in pain and uncomfortable. Have this doctor validate why he/she doesn't believe in painkillers and why you should have to deal with pain. (14 replies)
