I suspect because there's less messing around with the structures in your back, it will be a faster recovery, but I seriously wouldn't bet too much on it. I'd tell your work it could be longer. ... Personally, I think a discectomy is the right step once you've exhausted your other options (injections, PT, etc.). Once it's herniated badly enough, there's not much you can do besides surgery.
