i would buy a good quality brown, one shade lighter than your natural, in semi-permanent, warm or neutral shade so you won't turn out ashy toned. Put it on the lightest part first, wait at least 10-15 minutes and then put it on the rest of your hair, leave on another 10-15 minutes. That should give you a color nearest your natural color.

For the lighter brown with the honey highlights, give your hair a rest with some frequent conditioning, then find a good hairdresser you trust, to do it. It's too complicated a process to attempt yourself.

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm dark brown and want the same look, I just can't find a hairdresser to do it the right way, but.........also, it will take a lot of upkeep because of the dark roots when it's growing out, because then it would have to be lightened at the roots again, and then highlighted again.

Or as a comprimise, just do some darker caramel honey-ish over your brown.

Good luck.
