I have tried at-home dyes but only one highlighting kit. I used Feria, and HATED it! It made my hair dry and the color came out wrong. If your hair is brown, I wouldn't try to get blonde highlights at home b/c most likely it will turn out redd-ish. If you are trying to get caramel highlights it will probably work out fine. My brother used some color to make all of his hair lighter.. I think it was Loreal Xtreme Effects or something like that? They make different colored ones (some are wild), and he used the lightest one. His hair was really dark brown and came out kind of yellowish.. LOL! Just be careful with ones like that.

I really like Clairol Natural Instincts dye and Garnier Nutrisse dye.. both made my hair super soft and healthy when it was dry before using it. It made my hair so shiny and glossy too! I dyed medium brown hair a darker brown.

My friend said her mom used the Color Stylist (I think it's what it's called..), the one that comes with the color and highlighting kit, and she said she liked the results. I haven't tried it! I would just try to stick near your natural color to do it at home and then it will come out better!

Let us know if you find something good :)
