I assume when you say 'work', you're talking about pregnancy prevention? How long a pill takes to start preventing pregnancy depends on when she started taking it. Most pills work in one of two ways: 1) If she starts taking it on the first day of her period (Day 1 start), she is protected from pregnancy right away. 2) If she starts taking it on the Sunday after her period starts (Sunday start), she must use a back up method of birth control (condoms, foam, etc.) for the first seven days of the first pack of pills. After that she is protected against pregnancy, provided she took those first seven pills correctly (every day) and on time (same time every day). Also, there's nothing wrong with using back up birth control for the entire first month (pack), just to be safe.
