does 'break through bleeding' during packs of pills mean that the birth control doesnt work?
Nope! Break-through bleeding means that you may have just a little bit of bleeding in the middle of the month when you aren't on your period. This only happens for some people and should go away after the first few months of being on the pill if not earlier. I never had this happen with myself. This can also be called spotting.

As for your title asking how long birth control takes to work, that depends how you started. There are two ways to begin the pill. For most pills, if you start the pill your day your period starts, you are protected immediately. If you start the pill the Sunday after your period, it usually takes a week for the pill to work. Read the information on your specific brand of pill (it should come with the pills or you can check their website) to make sure yours has the same rule on this. This is how most pills work.
