I know exactly what you are going through! When I started the pill several years ago, I went through five before I got to the "right" one...so stressful. I tried Alesse, too, and also had crazy/irrational depression. That was my first pill, and I actually didn't try anything else for over a year, the experience was so bad. After I got over that, I also tried Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo, Cyclessa, Mircette, and Yaz. Yaz ended up being the winner, but I don't know exactly why.

Unfortunately, a lot of birth control comes down to trial and error. There are some ways to pick pills that will work better for you by looking up the different types and adrogenicity factors for the progestins in specific pills that you are taking. If you do an internet search for 'birth control androgenicity progestin' you can find a good breakdown of different pills and their expected side effects. Keep in mind, though, that everyone is different, and your response to a pill that works for a lot of peolpe, it might not work for you. This doesn't meant that you should lose hope; it just means you haven't found the right match yet.

I would look into trying Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo or Mircette next. I know a lot of people who have really liked these pills, and they have different progestins from the pills you have already tried. Another low dose option might be the Nuva Ring, if you are comfortable with that. It is supposed to be barely noticeable, and it is what I would try next if my pill stops working for me.

In any case, you seem to know your body well enough to know when things are changing in a negative way, and that is the most important thing to be aware of. If you feel unlike yourself, talk to your doctor about switching pills.
