Bowel Disorders Message Board

Bowel Disorders Board Index

I had a laser hemorrhoidectomy on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. First let me tell you.....I found out I needed this surgery at the beginning of May and seen about 6 surgeons. After reading this message board and other I was truly scared out of my mind. I have a 1 year old and the thought of being in too much pain to care for him and not being able to pick him up was insane. So I did some research, too much research. I live in Maryland and decided I was going to travel. Florida or Arizona.......I seen Dr. Peter Thomas at the laser hemorrhoid center in Phoenix. The trip cost me $900 for two people including hotel, airfare, and car. My insurance deductable was $500 and insurance paid 85% of the rest. My total trip and surgery cost was $1520. This is what it would have cost here with all of the hospital fees, nurses, assisting doctors, etc.

Anyway, the people there were fabulous and told me the first couple days after surgery would be rough. I had on extremely large external/internal hemorrhoid, a couple smaller external/internal hemorrhoids and a couple skin tags.

Day 1 - Surgery - 11:30 and back at hotel by 1:00pm with percoset, valium, and neosporin - I ate and slept on and off until 4:30am with only a mild burning. I took about 3 percosets through the night - used ice intermittently

Day 2 - Took a bath and applied neosporin, began Ibuprofen, I got dressed, went to breakfast, went to the casino, went to lunch, to the airport and a 5 hour flight home 2 percosets all day - used ice intermittently

Day 3 - Woke up, took a bath, played with baby, had come company in case I needed help (I didn't). It is now 6:00pm and I have only taken 1 ibuprofen all day - used a frozen hot dog in between my cheeks once, (per doctor suggestion), one more bath and now ready for dinner

I haven't done much but lay around and play with the baby but NO restrictions, I have picked him up and had minimal discomfort. I have eaten mostly salads, lots of water, some juice, crackers, cookies, etc. (I did eat two pieces of pizza today) I will keep you updated if interested since I haven't had a BM movement yet. I was given 3 weeks off of work with short term disability but right now I am not sure I need it.

Day 4 - I had my first bowel movement last night and it was soft but it really burned even after I got in the bathtub. Lasted for about 20 minutes. So, today I took 1 pain pill....I had some errands to run and think I over did it a little. Had another bowel movement this morning in the sitz bath this time.....much better.

Day 5 - I hurt a little this morning......I think it is just the healing process but so far so good
