Brain & Nervous System Disorders Message Board

Brain & Nervous System Disorders Board Index

A major thanks to anybody who reads this whole thing. You'll be helping calm the nerves of someone who is getting a bit nervous about this stuff.

I'm a generally healthy 24yo male; I regularly excercise, haven't had any major health problems in the past. My diet isn't the greatest, but it's certainly not the worst.

I have no idea if any or all of these are related. Just looking for some advice on where to go next to make sure I get back to normal.

a) Over the past 2 years, I've been having minor muscle spasms when going to bed. They don't happen every night, but if they do, it's usually a few times before I fall asleep (I don't know if they continue when I sleep). I'll flail out an arm, or kick out a leg, or have something in my upper back make me shrug. Occasionally I catch myself involuntarily making noises too, usually just a "uhhhhhh" sound right as I'm about to fall asleep and it'll wake me back up.

b) I've been feeling "pins and needles" all over my body randomly for a few weeks now. Normally it's just the arms and legs. Sometimes it's the hands. I can't seem to find a pattern of when it happens versus what I'm doing, etc. But it happens everyday. On rare occasion (for the time being?), it has gone into my face or jaw.

I can't do anything putting much pressure on anything without triggering it. Normally I cross a leg over the other knee. My whole life I could do this for longer periods of time before I had to switch legs; now I get pins and needles very easily. Same if I put my head on my hand (leaning on a desk or something), or try and cross my arms and put my head on them. I most frequently sleep on my side (either or), followed second by sleeping on my back. I can't sleep on my sides at all now without it getting all pins and needles in my upper body.

c) I've been tasting metal recently. First was a few seconds long, last night was a few hours, and now I woke up with it.

d) Along with b), my muscles feel drained. Namely my arms, but it can happen everywhere, and randomly. Sometimes it's more specified; one day I was carrying a grocery bag (singular) in each hand, and my arms felt exhausted afterward. The next day, I was carrying about 10 bags in each hand, and they were fine. But it'll just happen when I'm walking around, or sitting doing nothing.

e) General fatigue. The past few months I've just been fatigued. Doesn't matter how much sleep I get. I've been a bit better with trying to force a regimented schedule (go to sleep and get up around the same times), but I still can easily take naps after having been up for only 10 hours or so.

f) My mouth occasionally just hurts in general. I've always been great about dental care (I brush twice a day, floss once, and go to the dentist regularly), although I do have 3 or 4 silver fillings from when I was little and NOT good about dental stuff.

g) Occasionally I get a weird ringing in my ears. Rare, but I've not noticed it before.

h) This one has been more of a lifelong thing, but I have a pretty terrible memory, and maybe I'm just noticing it more because I'm paying so much attention to what's going on with my body lately, but at least once a day I'll forget something I was about to say, or do something like go in the kitchen and forget what it was I wanted, etc. It's always little things, but, in the event that might have any bearing on what might be going on, thought I'd list that.

Now here's the other factors of my story that help confuse me.

I like working out; I normally go every other day (usually 3 or 4 days a week). I take some supplements and vitamins;

Normally it's just a weight gainer protein powder (often mixed with creatine, although I've been off the crreatine for a few weeks now), a multivitamin, glucosamine, fish oil, and a protein bar snack thing.

One day a few weeks back though I tried this supplement stack with "P6", "M5", and "R3" from Cellucor (bought it at GNC). I tried what the GNC guy said for dosage, and that evening, I had my first pins and needles everywhere experience; I was restless, and in the morning my chest hurt (for a few seconds I was really nervous I might be having a heart attack since my chest hurt and my arms were all pins and needles), I was a bit shakey, and I was a bit emotional. The "P6" is the likely culprit, as it is a testosterone booster. Needless to say, I took it all back, fought for what refund I could, and yelled at the guy.

I stopped taking all supplements to try and flush my system out. Seemed to work, but after 1 week, I was back to feeling the pins and needles, and now all the other symptoms listed above.

A major question I've been wondering is are all the things above because of some horrible reaction to the supplement? Or is the fact that I had the first case of pins and needles after taking the supplement a coincidence?

I went to the clinic and told the doc all of this. He ran a blood test, and it came back normal and apparently healthy for a 24yo male - good cholesterol, normal blood pressure, normal chemical levels. He has suggested I go to a neurologist.

He thinks perhaps I have a pinched nerve, and I probably shouldn't worry too much about it. Just take it easier at the gym, etc.

Most of my family and friends think it's probably all stress related (I've been having scheduling problems with some acting-related work; I'm in LA; money issues, etc.). I don't -think- I'm stressed about any of that; I mean, in the general sense sure, but I'm not thinking about that stuff all the time like I do when I worry about other stuff.

If you made it this far, I thank you profusely. Any thoughts on what I should do next (I'm unable to get to the neurologist for a while...) or what I should be looking into would be much appreciated. A few friends have even suggested acupuncture, although I know little about that or its effectiveness.

It might by cyclical; it could just be the symptoms are from stress, but then I stress about the symptoms, making them worse, making me worry more... etc.

Could also be something I need to get checked out as soon as possible.

Anyway. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.
