Syrnix
Oct 31, 2010
I have had 3 cervical fusions. 1st in 2000 . 2nd 2006 3rd because the doc made a mistake and I was not healed at 5-6 he took my plate off and only plated c6-7 he went back in and removed the bank bone c5-6 &c6-7 then placed new bank bone c5-6 & c6-7 added BMP protein plated c5-7. He left me a gift at c-7 a srynix you can see the whole in my spinal cord perfectly lines up with the screw. I found Dr. John Oro Aurora Co.Chiari/srynix specialist however, he can't help me any further. He has referred me to Dr Scott Falci at Craig Hospital Denver Co. I am awaiting my first appointment. Dr Falci is the only spinal cord trauma doc in my area and he services peoples needs around the world and he is hard to see. In the meantime my symptoms are getting worse. I am trying to find anyone who has answers, thoughts, advice? 2 months ago I awoke early morning to numbness on my left side face teeth arm and leg. I went to the ER thinking I was having a stroke. After MRI with dye and a night in the hospital I was released and told it was not a stroke the MRI showed no signs and that it must be from the syrinx at c7. The numbness comes and goes, my blood pressure is all over the place, I have been able to duplicate the symptoms I call them party tricks. I felt vibration under my right foot when I lightly stomp my right foot the symptoms instantly occur to my left side. I get the feeling of passing out. This morning I awoke to this elevator head feeling that is staying. Turn my head and there it is and also blinking my eyes can trigger it I think. Or maybe I do move my neck slightly went blinking on purpose trying to see what all triggers it. I am very concerned I don't want to get out of bed now because of fear that I will fall or worse. I can't do anything except research at this point. Help!!!!!!!

I'm very sorry that you have had to go through so much. Syrinxes are rare, but are possible complications of spine surgery. It's possible that you had an asymptomatic syrinx that later grew and became symptomatic after your surgery, but based on your history it seems unlikely.

If you are experiencing problems due to blocked cerebral spinal fluid flow, your neurosurgeon may be able to correct the flow by making channels for the fluid to pass. If permanent nerve injury has occurred, the symptoms may not improve even after structural anomalies are corrected, in which case you will probably be treated to alleviate your symptoms. Neurontin or even high doses of Tylenol may be able to reduce the excessive GABA (a neurotransmitter) activity that is likely the cause of your symptoms. Lyrica may help reduce the excitability of your nerves, reducing the severity of your symptoms. Until you are able to see this new doctor, you may need to pester your current neurologist or neurosurgeon to treat your symptoms with one or more of these (or other) medications.

I hope and pray that you get relief soon.
