Brain & Nervous System Disorders Message Board

Brain & Nervous System Disorders Board Index

Hi everyone, I'm Amy and I'm 25. I just came across this part of the message board, and had a few questions to see if anyone could help me out.

I'm currently seeing a neurologist (only seen twice so far) for visual disturbances. I get these "episodes" where my peripheral vision seems to become closer in appearance to me than it really is. Neurologist says it's an atypical migraine, but sent me off for an EEG & MRI to rule out other things. He said both came back clear, however I read my MRI report and it mentioned the low lying cerebellar tonsils, but without evidence of a frank Chiari malformation.

I researched it, and from what I understand it that my tonsils don't reach the 5mm mark to classify it as a Chiari 1 malformation, right?

Visual disturbances
Pain in right eye sometimes
Photo sensitive pretty much most of the time
Headaches upon waking, laughing, orgasm
Neck pain sometimes
Headaches sometimes a few inches behind right ear
Tingling/numbness in right hand (I'm left handed if makes a difference)
Weakness in right arm sometimes
Currently getting over Iritis in right eye

Symptoms have been getting slowly worse the past year or 2. First visual disturbances occurred a while after turning 21.

Neurologist put me on Propandolol (spelling?) to prevent migraines, but I have yet to fill it since my neuro appt was just yesterday.

Does this sound like a Chiari malformation? Will a Chiari specialist actually consult with me without the Dx of the Chiari 1 malformation? I live in the Denver area, and I found that there's a Chiari specialist a town next to me, but I don't want to waste my time if they won't get me a consultation without the actual Dx.

Thanks in advance.
