High Cholesterol Message Board

High Cholesterol Board Index

I have been on Lasix since September 2004 and although there are no changes in my blood sugar my cholesterol levels have gone up quite a bit. I was put on Lasix on 9/3 and my previous cholesterol level (10/29/03) was 199. Triglycerides were 217. On 9/10 when I was discharged from hospital my Cholesterol was up to 291. Triglycerides were 201. LDL was 142 and the VLDL was 40.

On October 7, 2004 my cholesterol was 229, Trig. 140, LDL 160, VLDL 28 and the Chol/HDL ratio was 5.7. This is the first time in my life I've ever had high cholesterol and I can usually get it down by not eating certain foods.

I also posted a few questions on the Health Boards in the heart section but I went back to the Cardiologist on Wednesday 11/24 and he told me that as a woman I am not at risk for a heart attack until I'm 55 so I have a few years to go before I have to worry about having one of those. I also have a history of high blood pressure and my BP was 124/94 and after looking through my chart he told me that was normal for me and he doesn't think I have a BP problem either although I've been on a number of pills for it for over 20 yrs. I have a family history of high BP and heart disease in my family but he said that was not important because I have no other risk factors for heart disease.

I had gone back to the doctor because I had a new symptom I thought he should be aware of. I was having extra heart beats and sometimes after doing something strenuous my heart felt like it was missing a beat. This would hapen every 2-3 minutes and lasted for about 2 hrs. He said it was nothing to worry and so did a few other people on the Heart board so I'm not worried about it.

My magnesium level is also very low and was only .09 last week when I had blood work done. He says that's more than likely from the Lasix so I stopped taking it. My potassium level was ok. I also stopped taking the BP medications which were Cozaar 100mg and Clonidine .1mg.

It will be interesting to see if my cholesterol levels go down any now that I stopped all my medication.
