Red Yeast Rice
Mar 4, 2005
Have any of you tried Red Yeast Rice? It's a chinese herb (red powder in a clear capsule) and it has lowered my cholesterol and also my sister's. We swear by it. The Vitamin Shoppe seems to have the cheapest price - we buy their brand, even though they carry other brands. Supposedly it has ingredients similar to Lipitor.

Nature's Plus makes a standardized red yeast rice. I saw it in the Vitamin Shoppe.

O'Brien,

I think Nature's Bounty is out of the Red Yeast Rice business. Puritan Pride sells it pretty cheaply (under there own brand I presume.)
Prices:
Vitamin Shoppe Nature's plus is 30/$17.65 as Arizona noted.
I misplaced my new PP catalogue, but they are doing a 3/1 sale and it's much MUCH cheaper than the VS! Something like 3 bottles of 60 for around $18 (I may be off a bit.)

OK, found it: 3 bottles of 60 (600 mg. strength) / $13.69 for a total of 180 capsules...or about 8 cents apiece (take 2 a day.)

But again, call them and see if you can find out if there's any lovastatin in them. If not, then they aren't any more use than an empty capsule!

Thanks so much for that information. I really appreciate it!

I guess I am worndering how many people have had luck using this approach instead of drugs. My doctor is always so quick to want me to get on a drug, and I like to try alternatives first.

I have also read some reports about alcohol while taking this product and am wondering if a couple of glasses of red wine at night is a no no. I have this about 4 times a week. Is there a danger?

Am looking for the best price on various supplements for help in lowering cholesterol. Of course, potency and quality are important as well as price. I have been getting the house brand at Wal-Mart which I remember Consumer Reports recommended as far as containing the amounts listed on the labels. I have read Puritan's Pride and Vitamin Shoppe mentioned. Had not thought about shopping on the internet for supplements. Any other recommended sources?
