I want below 150
Jun 13, 2005
Hello. I am a 33 year old male. My father had a heart attack at 42, it was mild (one blockage) and he has been good for the last 20 years. My mother's father died of a massive coronary at 49, so I have a history on both sides of my family.

At 25 my cholesterol was 280, but my HDL was over 90. I was athletic and played linebacker and did martial arts. I went on 10 mg Lipitor at age 29. So far the results have been okay. My latest readings were the worst they were

TOTOAL - 189
HDL 51
LDL -108
Triglycerides - 152.

Not bad, but with my history, I would like to go lower. I eat pretty healthy, mostly wild game meats and chicken and salmon or halibut. I am about 20 lbs overweight 265 lbs, my playing weight in college was 240. I exercise 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes.

Is there anything else I can do to get lower? Policosanol (does this work, seems like a bunch of Cuban research), psylium? the plant sterols?

I really want my cholesterol below 150 and my LDL below 70.

Any advice?

Alaska,

Why did you chose the 150 and 70 numbers as targets to strive for (just curious)?

Your numbers seem very good to me. Going even lower is not necessarily a good thing, and I think the only way you will realistically get to these lower numbers is to go to 20mg of Lipitor.

You should be careful about combining drugs - I would NOT recommend Policosanol in addition to a statin. And yes, Policosanol was studied mostly in Cuba, but that does not mean it is a fraud. I just started on it and have not have my blood work done yet, but I've been reading about good results from it on the internet.

Do you eat sweets, drink alcohol or smoke? If the answer is YES, try cutting back. Also, avoid trans-fats like the plague (anything with the word 'hydrogenated' in it's ingredients).

I'd be more concerned about the LDL/HDL ratio (and yours is very good) than the TC number or the LDL number. One way you can boost HDL is thru exercise (which you're doing), or by taking Niacin. However, talk to your doctor about doing this while also being on a statin...

And as far as risk factors go, they usually only count heart attacks and CHD in immediate family members (a parent or sibling - not grandparents, aunts or uncles).

Alaska,

As an ex body builder myself I would say to try and lose some weight first and foremost. Even though a playing weight of 240 might have been OK in college, years later it might be to much.
Meat can be problematic but if it is lean cut, fat removed, it should be fine. It sounds like you are getting fish, but is it fried? Is any of your meat fried?
The best condition I was in my life was when I was eating eggs and high protein non-fried foods.
