Hi Lisa,

Your numbers are not that bad due tot he fact that your HDL is very good.
Ratio is good too.

The low fat low cholesterol diet is counter productive. Our bodies need fat and cholesterol as each provide us with essential nutrients. Our hearts and brains need cholesterol. Search on memory loss and statins (drugs used to lower cholesterol).

Saturated fat is NOT bad for you (so don't give up your chocolate - the darker the better for heart health). It's transfat that is bad.

Ask your doctor to check your homocysteine and hs-CRP (high sensitivity C-Reactive Protein). These two factors affect heart health more than elevated LDL cholesterol.

It's oxidized LDL cholesterol that is the problem, not just elevated LDL. Elevated homocysteine sets up the environment for oxidized LDL.

Optimal level for homocysteine is <6.2 (although most lab reports say up to 14 is OK). Elevated homocysteine and hs-CRP indicate inflammation. And again, inflammation is the problems, not elevated LDL.

If your homocysteine is elevated, take folic acid, B6 and B12 or just take a B complex to get all the correct ratios of the B vitamins. Omega 3 is also excellent for preventing and/or correcting inflammation.

Fact: 50% of the people that have a heart attack, have normal or low cholesterol.
