High Cholesterol Board Index

There really aren't any signs of having high cholesterol, unless you let it go on so long that you have a heart attack or stroke. What you can or can't eat will depend a lot upon how bad your cholesterol is. Before a blood test, eat a light meal. Especially avoid heavy carbohydrates like a big plate of spaghetti or a large sweet dessert. Avoid fried foods or a meal high in fats, too. Then you should fast for 12-14 hours. That's easy to do if you can schedule your blood draw in the morning; otherwise it might be more of an inconvenience. How soon you get your results varies from lab to lab. Some places you will get results the same day, or it could be several days.

I'd just suggest that you avoid letting the doctor talk you into taking medication for it immediately after getting your results. It would be much better if you have time to research and think about whether it would be possible and you'd be willing to make the effort to make the lifestyle changes necessary to get it down without meds. Some doctors are very quick to pull out the prescription pad even when the numbers are only slightly elevated, and the people here will be more than willing to offer suggestions to help you do it without meds if the elevation is only modest. Or are you the type of person who would rather just swallow a pill and hope the side effects aren't too bad?

Let us know your results: total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL) and triglycerides. You probably don't need a more complex test at this time.
