High Cholesterol Message Board

High Cholesterol Board Index

As a means of preventing heart disease, there are probably several useful supplements that can prove helpful. While I tend not to concern myself with total cholesterol, I remain far more focused on doing whatever I can to keep my HDL as high as possible, and keeping my triglycerides well under 100. My experience has been that both niacin and garlic have helped raise my HDL significantly. I have also found that eliminating sugar and other junk foods from my diet have proven helpful in lowering triglycerides. Keeping homocysteine and inflammation under control are also high priorities, as well as maintaining the health of my arteries. I believe that it in order to prevent heart disease, most people will need to increase their intake of antioxidants to much higher levels than what can be obtained from the average diet. With that being said, my current regimen for prevention is as follows:

6 grams Vitamin C
2-3 grams Lysine
800 IU natural Vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols)
200 mcg Selenium
200 mcg Chromium Picolinate
25,000 IU Marine Beta Carotene
6 Fish Oil capsules
1000mg Niacin
60mg Coenzyme Q-10 (Q-Gel)
1.6-2.4mg Folic Acid
100mg B-6
1000mcg B-12 (as methylcobalamin)
B-50 complex
600-800mg magnesium
Garlic (standardized for 6500mcg allicin)
2000mg Taurine
50mg Zinc
