High Cholesterol Board Index

My cholestorl is 384 and my triglycerides are 760. My LDL is very high and my HDL is Low (according to my doctor, I didn't receive the numbers for those).

I have a history of heart disease in my family. I am 6'3" 335 lbs. I am, apparently a heart attack waiting to happen :(.

Here are some basic guidelines:

- Reduce your intake of saturated fats (including less red meat, butter, whole milk, cheese)
- Increase your intake of veggies and fruits (lean more towards the veggies)
- Avoid any processed foods with trans-fats (any ingredient with the word 'hydrogenated' in it)
- Limit intake of white carbs (white bread, potatoe, rice)
- Reduce intake of sugars and high-fructose corn syrup
- Limit alcohol consumption to one drink per day
- Eat fish 2-3 times/week
- Eat more whole grain products (oatmeal, whole wheat bread...)
- Chose carbs that have a low glycemic-index (do a search on the web)
- Exercise aerobically for 1/2 hour at least 3 times/week and try to drop some weight
- Try garlic, green tea extract, cinnamon supplements

You have to get your triglycerides down. That will also lower your total cholesterol level. You can drop trigs relatively quickly by avoiding sweets, alcohol, saturated fats, and reducing caloric intake.

A good site to start reading is the American Heart Association's site.
