Hope someone here can help me understand what is gong on with my numbers. I'm a 53 year old female (and not overweight), My total cholesterol has always been a little on the high side (but still under 240). This past April my doctor told me I need to get it DOWN. I went on a major diet, cut out butter, margarine, trans fat, most saturated fat, cookies, cakes, meat, etc. Switched to skim milk, use only canola or olive oil, increased fiber intake, which was high to start with. You know the routine, I did all the things I was supposed to do. Also started walking 3-5 times a week, about 45 minutes. In August I was retested, total cholesterol went down to 204, Triglycerides plummeted from 121 to 68, and LDL went from 154 to 134. HDL only went up two points to 56. Doctor said keep up the good work and come back in two months, you still need to get total below 200. I continued with the same diet, but dropped the walking and bought an exercise bike and now use that 6 days a week for 30 minutes (expending much more energy). I thought I was doing really well. Surprise, surprise, I get retested. Now I am finally below 200 (186), but my HDL took a nose-dive from 56 to 40 and my triglycerides jumped up to 98. The only reason my total cholesterol went down is because my good cholesterol went down The bad stuff stayed about the same. And now my ratio is off!!!! After all the exercise I am doing, it certainly doesn't seem worth it if I am worse off than when I started. I really don't understand what happened!!! I was better off without the bike it seems. My doctor says don't worry, you are below 200, but he isn't looking at the whole picture. I want to know why the HDL went down and triglycerides went up when exercise is supposed to do just the opposite. I don't understand this at all. Can anyone offer some insight into this?
