My Doctor currently has me taking 2,000mg Immediate Release Niacin all at once at bed time. I take two 1,000mg capsules. He advised me not to split the Niacin dosage and to take it all at once. Will taking 2,000mg all at once still be effective? My Doctor told me yes…. But I was just uncertain. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

paging Ventureman :)
Arizona, 2000 IR is getting up there are you having any problems with the flush?

I can only guess because I have no first hand experience. But based on some things I've read your doctor is using the niacin to both raise HDL and lower LDL and possibly LP(a) with that dosage. That would be consistant with him having you drop the RYR.

When you get your next test you should lobby for one of the Lipoprotien test. I'm guessing your results should be very good with the niacin diet and exerciese. Good luck.

Hi Red60,

Thank you very much for your response. I continue to flush every night when I take the Niacin. I do take 2,000mg immediate release all at once per my Doctor’s orders. I started on 500mg and my Doctor worked me up to now 2,000mg immediate release at bedtime. I am tolerating it very well now and the flush does not bother me at all. Since I have a slight LDL problem in the past instead of the Red yeast Rice he decided to increase the Niacin to 2,000mg for that. My HDL as of my last lipid panel this past August was at 42. I hope to see some results by February.. My doctor has never been concerned about my LP(a), but he prefers me to be on Niacin for the long term as opposed to Red yeast Rice since he advised Niacin is a great proven and safe treatment. Once tested in February I will post my results. I continue to work out five days a week and eat right as well.
My numbers inproved markedly when I started taking niacin all at once... at bedtime. In the beginning, I took it in the morning and in the evening.
Hey Venureman and Red60,

Thank you both for your responses. I will know if Niacin is working for me when I have my next lipid panel in the beginning of February. That will give me a sold six months on it. I am still on 2,000mg immediate release Niacin taken all at once at bed time. I hope to see an improvement with my HDL as it was only 42 this past August. My main concern though and my Doctor's as well is keeping my LDL low. As of my last test my LDL was at 78 which was great and my Doctor was real pleased with that and he wants it to stay that way. My Doctor asked me to drop the
Red Yeast Rice and he put me on a high Niacin dosage 2,000mg. I hope I can maintain my LDL at 78 with 2,000mg of Niacin. What do you think? Will my LDL go up or should 2,000mg what my Doctor has me on keep it under control? All I can do is just wait till the beginning of February when I have my next test. I have changed nothing in regards to my diet, exercise etc... My Doctor advised if he does not see an improvement by February he wants me back on the Red Yeast Rice. All he wanted me to do is just give Niacin a try as he feels more confertable me being on Niacin for the long term.

Hi again Arizona77,

Don't really know why you dropped the RYR, as it's multi-gram intake per day for over seven hundred years has not wiped out the Chinese or any other Asian nation's people with Liver or any other organ failure. Until you dropped it's intake it helped you significantly.

It is only recently that the western world has discovered that RYR also has cholesterol lowering properties, and good one's at that, but still think that it is a modern discovery, so, as with everything else new, we are skeptical.

I don't want to appear an alarmist my 'thread friend', but to answer your question, I reckon your HDL will climb to a better figure, but at the expense of an increase in your LDL along with TC.

As I have stated before, two grams of Vitamin B3 per day is awfully high. Are you also supplementing with a multi B-complex formula?

Lord Taff.

Hi Lord_Taff,

A lot are telling me to go back on the Red Yeast Rice and personally I agree with them and with you as it has worked so well for me for the past three years. I have had no issues no side effects just out standing results.

My Doctor wanted me to give Niacin a try and I agreed. After a sold six months on Niacin I guess I will see if it is working well or not. If it is not my Doctor will put me right back on the Red Yeast Rice.

As for a B-complex I do take a B 100 complex every morning.

Cheers;)
