I'd suggest asking for a VAP lipoprotein test (or NMR, Berkley, whatever flavor your doctor likes), and tests for c-reactive protein and homocysteine. The VAP test will be much more accurate than a regular lipid test and show particle sizes. Due to your low triglycerides, you have an excellent chance of having large particle LDL, which is mostly harmless.

If you and your doctor decide to lower your LDL based on the VAP test results, maybe try a lower dose Niaspan and see if it helps? Instead of 1 gram, try 500mg. You can ask your doctor about fish oil too.

Oat bran is something else you could try. Although it doesn't taste so great (at least to me), it's a better option than a statin.
