Greetings!

I had some bloodwork done and Doc wasn't happy with my triglycerides. He said I need to take 3000 mg daily of "fish oil capsules." I'm reading the handout he provided verbatim. I'm supposed to start at 1000 mg a day with food and work up to 3000 mg over the next few weeks.

The health food store guy sold me Nordic Naturals which he said each capsule contains 1000 mg purified fish oil. This is also listed on the front of the bottle. He said to start out taking one pill a day, then two, eventually up to three to get to doc's orders of 3000 mg.

However, I'm reading posts here that sound like I need to read the back of the bottle and break out a calculator. Or call the doc and clarify.

The back of the bottle lists the omega 3's as follows:

Per serving (2 soft gels)

EPA 330 mg
DHA 220 mg
other omega 3's 140 mg
total omega 3's 690 mg

Do I need to just take one per day initially and get myself up to three in order to be to the recommended 3000 mg per day or take something closer to 10 a day?

Hi Stenolady,

It's great that your doctor would recommend fish oil capsules. Most doctors just push increase statin doses. There is a Prescription purified form of Omega-3 fish oil, it's called LOVAZA the name changed from OMACOR. This is the highest quality pharmaceutical blend. If you have a decent prescription insurance plan, it's probably cheaper than NORDIC or other store brands, besides it is FDA approved and regulated. I asked my doctor for a prescription,
but he refused. His explanation was that OMEGA-3 fish oil affects the clotting factors of blood (makes us more susceptible to bleeding). I still take fish oil anyway (CARLSON brand)

P.S. If your doctor would fill OMEGA-3 fish oil prescription. Go for it...

I hope this information helps......
