High Cholesterol Board Index

Well I'm looking to get some feedback/recommendations on my situation and for the future.

I'm a 23 yr. old Male, and have somewhat high cholesterol. It runs in both sides of my family, my dad has slightly high cholesterol, and some of the males on my mom's side have it as well.

On my mom's side there is a history of heart disease in her mom (she died of a heart attack). My mom's dad also has a slight history of heart disease....but more of a history of cancer then heart disease (yeah me). I don't believe my dad's side of the family has any history of heart disease.

For some facts/numbers.

I excercise 3 times a week, which includes weight lifting and 20-30 min of cardio (biking) every workout session. My diet is not super low fat, but I don't eat badly.

height: 5'8"
weight: 140-145 lbs

Here's the cholesterol info from the last three readings.

Risk Ratio: 5.4
Trig: 142

Date: 9/07/2002
Total Chl: 207
HDL: 43
LDL: 136
Risk Ratio: 4.8
Trig: 139

Date: 1/29/2003
Total Chl: 178

Risk Ratio: 5.1
Trig: 112

I think there was another test in November some time, but I don't have the papers. Between that time in november and january I got back into working out on a regular basis, and tried to cut back on fatty foods, which seemed to help a little.

My doctor made mention that it was strange that my HDL numbers went down after having exercised more.

She sorta said what we do is kinda up to me. I'm not a big fan of taking pills as the end all to fix things, but I don't think dieting and exercise will drop my numbers too much. So the dilemma is do I just keep an eye on it, or should I start treating it now?

My doctor has told me there are long term benefits from having the lowest LDL cholesteral numbers you can get. But like I said, I'm not a big pill fan. She gave me a month's trial dosage of lipitor to see how it affects things, and if I have any side affects. I just started taking it yesterday, so I'm assuming it's a little too soon to notice any major side affects.

Sorry for the long post.....just wanted to get all the info I can into it.
