These are the most commonly reported numbers.

The usual guidelines (which can be found all over the place) say that:

LDL should be less than 160, ideally less than 100 (note: guidelines usually indicate that those with more risk factors for heart disease should go lower)
HDL should be more than 40, ideally more than 60
VLDL should be less than 30
Triglycerides should be less than 150

You might be genetically unlucky to have an unfavorable blood cholesterol profile. However, there are also things you can do that you have probably heard about to improve it:

More exercise.
Avoid hydrogenated oils / trans-fats (common in processed foods and fast food restaurants).
Limit saturated fats (common in fat from red meat, milk, and coconut / palm oil)
Consume unsaturated fats instead of the above fats (common in fish, non-hydrogenated vegetable oil other than coconut / palm oil, nuts, and avocados).
Limit sugars and other low fiber or refined carbohydrates.
If you smoke, quit.

You should talk to your doctor about the cholesterol numbers and what you can do to improve them to lower the risk of heart attacks.

These other findings may be used to determine treatment options. Ask your doctor to explain their significance. Although be aware that with LP(a), lower is generally better, and large buoyant LDL and HDL is better than small dense LDL and HDL.
