High Cholesterol Board Index

Hi,
Just heard from my doctor after my yearly exam. My cholesterol shot up to 283 with high LDL. Last year it was 229.
I'm going through menopause (or at least perimenopause.) I've been pretty good with my diet but not perfect (been eating chocolate sorbet that has 5% cholesterol vs just sorbet.) Also haven't exercised.

Two years ago when my cholesterol was high (249), I brought it down to 190 by just exercising and being really strict with diet.

Any other suggestions. I'm loath to start lipitor.

Thanks
Lisa

Seems like you know the general solution here. In case you are not sure of the specifics, here are some:

To raise HDL (the good cholesterol):

Increase exercise (you may need to consult with your doctor if you are currently not exercising).

To lower LDL:

Avoid trans-fats from hydrogenated oils (common in processed foods and fast foods).
Avoid saturated fats (common in fat from red meat, dairy products, and coconut and palm oil).
Replace the above with unsaturated fats (common in nuts, fish, and non-hydrogenated vegetable oils other than coconut and palm oil).
Lose excess body fat.
(Note: most people's blood cholesterol levels are not very sensitive to dietary cholesterol, but some people's blood cholesterol levels are. If you are one of those people, you may have to avoid high cholesterol foods like shimp, squid, egg yolks, etc.)

To lower VLDL / triglycerides:

Limit sugars and simple carbohydrates.
Limit alcohol.
Lose excess body fat.
Increase exercise.
