High Cholesterol Message Board

High Cholesterol Board Index

Greetings,

I've been searching all over the web for discussion on cholesterol levels such as the below but without luck. I am 32 and in healthy shape but had some puzzling lipid numbers recently taken:

HDL - 33
LDL - 53
Total Cholesterol - 101
Trigylcerides - 74

I realize the HDL number is low and needs to come up, but does having the other three numbers at such low levels negate that low HDL number?

I would have posted this to a "Low Cholesterol" forum if there was one but thought those on this board might have some insight.

Regards,

Phil
The usual criteria indicate lower risk due to low TC / HDL ratio, but higher risk due to HDL < 40. Your doctor is as puzzled by the results as well?

You may want to consider getting a more detailed blood lipids test, particularly if you have family history of heart disease in people who do not have the usual risk factors (high LDL cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.). The more detailed tests include things like:

* Direct measurement of LDL (instead of approximating LDL = TC - HDL - TG / 5)
* Type of LDL (small dense is more dangerous than large buoyant)
* Type of HDL (large buoyant is more protective than small dense)
* Lp(a) or Lipoprotein A (high levels are high risk even when LDL, HDL are good)

You may want to increase exercise, since that raises HDL (and reduces the risk of diabetes). Obviously, if you smoke, stop smoking, and if you have excess body fat, try to lose it, since high body fat makes it more likely to have bad LDL numbers, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Thanks for the detailed explanation you last posted. That helped me to understand what was previously Greek to me.

Wow! I wish I had these numbers. The way I understand it, do not worry about your good cholesterol. The good cholesterol is supposed "to take care of" the bad cholesterol. Your bad cholesterol is so low that it does not need "to be taken care of." You are heart attack proof. At least, that is how I understand the cholesterol numbers.
 I wouldn't be able to get out of bed with numbers that low! Is that natural and without any drugs? What do you eat?
I wish I was you...i would gladly give you some of my high cholesterol...my fathers is low but..he has conjestive heart failure...and get this not from high cholesterol...and he has lovely blood pressure...his goes low..but he is 85....so I find the older folk have lower stats....they dont eat as much as us youngsters do..haha im 58....so, i would call my dr or ask a nurse abt that..they are informed as well..or even better yet..if you know anyone who is a naturopath..or a person who is a nutritionist into natural meds ..sometimes th ey know..my mom is practically a naturopath..she reads all the books and treats my dad who like I said..has conjestive heart failure..but she is keeping him alive...with her supplements and herbs
