High Cholesterol Message Board

High Cholesterol Board Index

The total of 201 (presumably mg/dl) does not say much. What you want to know is HDL, LDL, and VLDL (or triglycerides). Basically, you want HDL to be high and the rest to be low.

As far as height, weight, and belly, your height and weight are in the "obese" range. While some people in that range have low body fat percentage (think athletes, body builders, American football linebackers, ...) and are not at increased risks of obesity related problems, the belly you describe yourself as having indicates that that is unlikely to be the case for you. If your waistline is more than half your height or more than 0.95 of your hip (for men; 0.8 for women), then it is likely that you are carrying too much body fat, particularly the more health-risky abdominal fat.

The usual ways to help your blood cholesterol numbers:

To raise HDL: increase exercise, avoid trans-fats from hydrogenated oils, lose body fat

To lower LDL: avoid trans-fats from hydrogenated oils, avoid saturated fat, replace with unsaturated fat, lose body fat

To lower VLDL or triglycerides: reduce sugar and alcohol, lose body fat, eat fish fat
