Niaspan is the best choice of cholesterol lowering medications. I doubt that at such a low level of Niaspan, your husband developed gout. Niacin may raise Uric Acid levels (a little) at high doses and raise glucose levels slightly. I take 3,000 + mg. a day and only had a Uric Acid increase once in the past 7 years. If the choice was a statin like Lipitor or Crestor instead of Niacin, It would be more than the big toe affected. Statins cause body and joint aches, breakdown of muscle, stomach pain and an increase in liver enzymes.
These are only the mild side effects.
