... I was going to say that that sounds like a genetic problem to me, but I am no expert. I do know from my own research that cholesterol can increase around about the age of 45 in men - it is older in women, around 55. If it is genetic, it can kick in at any age, I guess - but that is something I know very little about. With me, I was lucky - it was dietary, pure and simple. I... (19 replies)

... No, sorry they don't give the individual readings, just total cholesteral. I don't think they even test for HDL, LDL, just total. They started doing this about 6 months ago. Now while I do think it is helpful, at times I do wonder. After all I have to "pump iron" to pass the iron test and also eat a "good" meal before giving blood. So that in itself will skew the... ... That would be too simple. Mine is: HDL 35 (should be >50) LDL 55 (should be <115) Total CH 123 (should be <190) However, the ratio of Total/HDL seems to be the general guide as to whether you need treatment. At 3.6, yours seems to be fine although, like me, you have an HDL level that is too low. (3 replies)

... Your total cholesterol should be computed as LDL, plus HDL plus your Triglycerides divided by 5. If your total cholesterol came out at 169 that would suggest that your Triglyceride level is about 85 - also really great! Gail (3 replies)

... Do not drink more. If you don't drink don't start if you do, do it in moderation. There are better key factors to reducing cholesterol than alcohol. Excercise and eating healthy should be first and foremost. It may be genetics but I would try healthier alternatives before I gave into pharma meds..Good luck, Lisa (14 replies)
... Gohomekid, It is confusing - there are no simple answers. For me personally, exercise had almost no effect on raising my HDL. I haven't had much luck to date with Niacin or the one-glass-or-red-wine-a-day regimen either. For some their genetic makeup makes it quite hard to raise HDL. Whether you should be concerned or not really depends on your detailed numbers... (14 replies)
