... No vic, you have that wrong. The duty of the FDA is to regulated the safety and efficacy of all drugs, and the safety of all foods, and food additives (as in color FDA Red #40 etc) and cosmetics. (I just read the statutes.) The mere fact that certain drugs require Rx's in no way changes the jurisdiction of the FDA. SUPPLEMENTS were specifically excluded by an act of... (15 replies)
... Lenin: That I know of of, asprin, and for that matter non-prescription niacin, is OTC and as such is not regulated by the FDA. Manufacturers can change concentration at will once approved for OTC sales. The FTC does regulate unsubstantiated specific claims on OTC, not the FDA. Red yeast rice is a red brown or purple colored rice due to being fermented with a specific... (15 replies)
... Labrat, The Pauling Therapy claims to reduce Lp(a) levels. It calls for 5-6 grams of vitamin-c, 5-6 grams of L-Lysine, and 2 grams of L-Carnatine taken in several doses spaced out thru the day. Look it up on the internet - it may be worth a try for you. If it doesn't work after a few months you can just discontinue it. Besides, I don't think there are any... (42 replies)

Calcium test?
Oct 13, 2005
... Jane..I think 3 years ago I saw Oprah take one on her show, it was an image type test. Now that I think of it, I believe she did one of those full body scans. At that time she had a very small amount of calcium buildup. Outside of that, I really don't know how they do it, but would assume it would be something like she had done. I'm sure someone with more info. about it can... (5 replies)

... This morning I read an account of a 50-year-old man who was determined to avoid an early death by heart attack. His father had suffered one in his 50's and eventually died a few years later from another attack. This man had started exercising and eating healthy foods while in his teens. He did not have high cholesterol for most of his life and never smoked or drank to excess.... (5 replies)
High Tri's
Aug 15, 2005
... Hi BarbJ, My blood test last week also indicated my triglycerides were high. My doctor told me to think "SUGAR". Things like ice cream, cakes, bread and even alcohol (wine, beer etc..) will raise triglyceride levels. Even though I take 3,000 mg of prescription niacin, 10 mg of pravachol, fish oil capsules, garlic, antioxidants (C, E selenium) My triglycerides were 261.... (27 replies)

... ACE, That alternate site and pricing for Puritan Pride via the TV ad had me scratching my head too. NOTHING can beat that 3 for 1 that just ended...and I didn't need anything, nuts! Now the SAME things are 2 for 1 :nono:. I WISH they sold buld protein poweder, liquid cod liver oil, or had a good price on CoQ-10. But even without those 3 of my staples, PP's prices are... ... Yeah,, I gotta keep the closet full because I am ALWAYS fliriting with the idea of cancelling my health insurance ($650/month) and making a prayerful RUN for Medicare... my partner keeps discouraging this. If I DO cancel, then I have to become my own doctor and eat my way through my medicine closet. (My doctor bills $220 to say hello and then adds sundries like $35 for a... (34 replies)
... I'll take some of that Diazepam myself...... :D Seems the drs. are getting so they would rather shove U on something else, of course, as it is more expensive. Sounds like U have a closet full of stuff for whatever ails U.. ;) (34 replies)

... I'll be curious to see what the hexanicotinoate does for your HDL. If you get a nice boost, I'll try it. The flushing from the quick hit regular is getting wearisome even if I keep it at tolerable levels (low). How high a daily dosage are you hoping to build to? (34 replies)

... kirannewife, Be VERY leary of that higher dose. What you are suffering is the worst kind of flush reaction: angioedema. Any throat swelling is potentially FATAL. The first sign of angioedema is a slight swelling of the lips. The first time I took 500 mg.
