... Our data indicate that current guidelines for lipid management may misclassify subjects with high levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol as well as those with low levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol. ... (13 replies)
... smyrnaboy, Within testing error, I'd say the results of both tests are indentical for all practical purposes. And, of course, it's your LDL that's high giving a ratio of TC/HDL in the 5's rather than below 4.0. I'd cut the saturated fat from the diet as much as posssible. Seek out a few of the biggest fatty offenders and work on them. Dairy is often a good starting... (3 replies)
... the know". I'm really trying to avoid having to go to pharmaceutical drugs if I can. For those with a similar profile are you currently taking any drugs to raise HDL or lower TC? ... (2 replies)

... The usual criteria indicate lower risk due to low TC / HDL ratio, but higher risk due to HDL < 40. Your doctor is as puzzled by the results as well? You may want to consider getting a more detailed blood lipids test, particularly if you have family history of heart disease in people who do not have the usual risk factors (high LDL cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure,... ... The lipid panel I had done this week was the first time I received a print-out which included Non-HDL. Consequently, I'd never really thought much about it before. Now I wonder what implications might be there. Is it good, for example, to have a small difference between LDL and Non-HDL? Or is it bad? And why? These are the figures I had, for what it is worth: TC=241,... (2 replies)
... fasting test and the HDL was 19. His doctor had him come in for a fasting test and a NiaSpan rx. ... (3 replies)
... Thanks for the info!! I didn't know the statins didn't really help those with high HDL (at least in the elderly). Very interesting. I'm afraid to take medication, anyway. If I have to, I will, but I so want to go the natural route so that I don't have to worry about side affects or how it may affect my liver or kidneys. Thanks for responding!! (16 replies)
... My last two fasting blood tests have yielded normal HDL and TRIGs, but high LDL. The high LDL is skewing the TC as high and above 200. ... (3 replies)
... Your numbers look fine to me. Here is the breakdown: TC/HDL = 4.2 should be <4.5 LDL/HDL = 2.9 ahould be <3.2 Trig/HDL = 1.7 should be <2.0 The rest of the lab also looks good. It's important to look at the ratios, as you can see. (4 replies)
... Roger P., Assuming your TC is 155 here are your ratios based on the latest lab: TC/HDL 4.0 looking for <4.5 LDL/HDL 2.5 looking for <3.2 Trig/HDL 0.5 looking for <2.0 (10 replies)
... Your TC/HDL risk ratio is 4.0. Your LDL/HDL risk ratio is 2.7. According to the recent report of research and the article titled "Statins of Little Benefit in Those with High HDL," they were referring to an LDL/HDL ratio of under 3.3. But that was for the elderly. Those in the study were ages 70-82. LDL alone has been shown to be an important factor for younger persons. ... (16 replies)
... escribing high blood pressure medication to a person who has low blood pressure. If I were you, I wouldn't even worry about it. It would be another story if your TC was 204, and your HDL was only 28. But such is not the case. ... (10 replies)
... Low HDL by itself is bad... and is probably a better indicator is issues than high LDL. You need to do something to get that HDL up above 40. ... (5 replies)
... The answer is...that's because to date, there is no "too high" for HDL. The main purpose of HDL is to transport cholesterol from tissue back to the liver. ... (9 replies)
... You will need to increase your HDL. It should be above 40. It would be a good idea and have your Doctor test you lipids and see how your numbers are. With your HDL at 33 your Doctor may want to do something. ... (5 replies)

... Am I supposed to look at the low HDL by itself as being bad, or am I supposed to compare it to LDL or Total? ... (5 replies)
... You are likely to get various opinions about this, but if you are more of a believer in ratios, as I am, then I'd say you are doing okay. I think that when you evaluate lipid profiles, it's best to look at the bigger picture, and not just focus on any one particular number. What may be considered high for one person may be all right for someone else. It all depends on how... (25 replies)
