Cancer: Colon Board Index

i also submitted this query to the bowel disorders board but i figured that it fit here and there might be viewers here that would have good feedback that might not go there.

there is visible blood in my stool and i'm a little concerned about it. i was just wondering what the likelyhood of it being what was.

mainly i'm concerned because cancer runs in my family, my grandmother died of cancer and my aunt has cancer. my grandmother died of ovarian cancer and my aunt has terminal colon cancer.

i'm only nineteen but i know that doesn't exclude me from that risk.

i was also diagnosed with von willbreds disorder when i was younger, a bleeding disorder so was wondering if that could be related.

the stools are soft but formed and it's visible red blood.

thank you for any help.

Hey ConcernedChic:

I also presented with blood around my stools, mucous with blood, etc. when I was 28. I am now 31, and they just dx me last September with Stage 3C Rectal Cancer. My Internist at the time kept missing it, and telling me that I was under a lot of stress, and sometimes stress and Advil, and maybe a hemmorhoid could cause bleeding... never sent me for a referral.

I tell you all this because you are never too young, especially with a family history. As scary as it sounds, you need to call up your GP and get a referral to a Gastroenterologist. The GI will schedule you for a colonoscopy. Better to get one now then to wait and have it be something they could have taken now on colonoscopy. The worst part of a colonoscopy, for me, was the prep... you have lots of diarrhea.. make sure you use baby diaper ointment. The scoping part lasts less than 5 minutes.. they give you drugs to make you comfortable-- (if not ASK for them!)

You should never except them making assumptions about the bleeding until you get confirmation with a colonoscopy-- (I wouldn't bother if they offer you a sigmoidoscopy... that only checks out your sigmoid region, and you are not medicated like you are for a colonoscopy... demand a colonoscopy!)

GOOD LUCK. And please, come back to the board to let us know your results.

Regards,
CancerDad :)
