Cancer: Colon Board Index

First of all I'm not going to tell you not to worry because you're going to anyway. I know because I was the same way about 11 yrs ago. I was 38 yrs old and I was going to a Hematologist because I was anemic. No matter what medications I took for the anemia my blood count would either stay the same or it would drop lower. The doctor insisted that I needed to go to a GI doctor to have a colonoscopy done but when he explained the test to me I knew I didn't want it done so I kept putting it off. I figured I knew more than him because I was anemic all my life.

Later that year this doctor suddenly retired and I had to find another one so I started going to the Hematolgist who was treating my mother for Breast Cancer. As soon as he saw my blood levels he insisted I go see the GI doctor because he thought I had Colon Cancer. That was all I had to hear. I was happy when he called this doctor and got me an appointment right away.

It turned out to be the best thing that could've happened to me. This GI doctor was and still is the sweetest doctor I've ever been to in my life. After doing a few tests it was determined that I needed a colonoscopy. The prep was the worst part. I had to drink almost a gallon of this stuff called Go-Lytley. It tasted like seaweed. I was nervous about the colonoscopy though but the nurses and the doctor were great. I was sedated and never felt a thing. I had several polyps removed and only one was considered precancerous but since they got it in time I was lucky.

That was in 1993. Once the polyps were removed my blood counts started to improve and I am no longer anemic. If I had continued to ignore the doctors and not had the colonoscopy done I would have had colon cancer. I've had many colonoscopies since then and the worst part is the prep. If you're using the Fleet Phosopho-Soda prep try mixing it with Crystal Light Lemonade. Do not mix it with anything you like to drink or it will ruin the taste for you forever. I mixed it with Sprite Soda and to this day I can no longer drink Sprite soda. The next time I mixed it with Orange juice because I don't like Orange juice. It worked and I was able to get it down with no problems and the colder the better.

I'm glad this doctor you went to made you feel comfortable and you are going to have the colonoscopy done. Having the right doctor can sometimes mean the difference in a diagnosis. I don't think you were too late though because after reviewing all my old blood tests from the dr that retired it was determined that I was bleeding for over 5 yrs. I never saw any amount of blood though. Sometimes I would see a little but nothing to panic about.

If you're still not convinced that you need a colonoscopy or if you think about changing your mind I will tell you the story of my older brother whose ending was not as happy as mine. As unpleasant as we all think a colonoscopy is it's really a lifesaver. If telling my brother's story would convince one person to get one then I'd be happy to tell it.

Good Luck and let us know how you made out.
